Nate Woody's defenses are absolutely unreal

Unread post by diehardapp18 » Fri Oct 23, 2015 12:21 am

That marks two weeks in a row where the opposition had early success moving the ball and instantly he adapted and made adjustments and they couldn't do a thing the rest of the game. I'm sure the talent of our players helps too but still, I've really never observed anything like it. Crazy to think this time last year we all wanted him fired and now he's given us a defense that I truly believe is one of the best in the country at any level. We're lucky to have him.

No doubt, Woody makes great in game adjustments

Definitely beginning to understand why we always seemed to have so much trouble with Wofford.

I for one never wanted him fired. But I get what you're saying. The smartest move the new coach in Columbia could make is to call Woody the second he signs his contract and offer him a million bucks to be his d coordinator. Hopefully that doesn't happen for our sake...

On a short week of preparation.

Everybody always talks about the benefit of extra time when preparing for option offenses.

And our defense did that on a short week.

Perhaps the only downside to Woody's shut down defense, and the in-game adjustments we've seen this season, is that App may not be able to keep Woody on staff. What that defense has done in the last 3 games to adjust and blanket offenses is Bud Foster good, better even.

Hmmm I don't know... I sort of get the sense Woody is as dedicated to App as Satt. Years of being our foil down the road; perhaps one gets the satisfaction of being on the other side of the coin. Kind of like when they made Hulk Hogan the bad guy after being the good guy. ? Meh.. either way... hell of a good coach.

Beau...where's that thumbs down button???..jk.... Don't give Elliot any ideas.

Woody has done a very nice job, even at Clemson before our back to back to back turnovers, Ark St is the next real challenge for his D.

Hey Black, still basking in the glow, rest assured we passed our biggest test. There is a significant drop from GASO to Arky. We will likely score 40-50 pts. on all remaining SunBelt teams. That is not to brag its just a statement that the rest of the Belt's teams play poor defense. Also, no team in the SunBelt will score 20 pts. on us this season.

I don't know....I think that Arkansas State will be a close game and could go either way - the others this year, we SHOULD win though. Really need the fans to come out for that Thursday night game, will be very important for our conference championship hopes (and hopes of running the table the rest of the year). I think ULL is a little down this year based on what I've seen so far.

Never count out any opponent. "Sure thing" doesn't count until there is 00:00 on the clock at the end of the game.... Just saying...

Tough to compare Southern and A-State when they haven't played last year or this. Basically what we know about Southern is that they're better than Sun Belt teams 5-11.

You're right about Sun Belt defenses, though, and I do think we beat A-State.

Except for a melt down next week against Troy, I suspect we will go into the Ark State game fairly heavy favorites. I also think the most difficult opponent this team will face now is itself and staying focused on the most important game, the next game.

Hopefully this team sees what I would think are clearly defined goals:

1. Win every game
2. Win the conference (accomplish #1 takes care of this one)
3. Secure a good bowl bid (of course out of our control) but still can be helped.

If memory serves me correctly, South Alabama manhandled us in Boone last year. I believe Ar Kansas State and South Alabama need to be respected as dangerous opponents.

Of course the rest of the teams we face should and will be respected. I have no doubt in my mind that the coaches will have the players focused on one week at a time.

The App State team South Alabama man handled in Boone last season is not the same team they will face this year. They aren't the same team either.

Troy is struggling but they got a new coach who is trying to build them up the right way. That should sound familiar to us App fans.

Arkansas State will throw every trick play they can at us and are very dangerous.

If we slip, we will lose. This isn't like FCS where we can play 60% and beat Western by two scores. Everyone has talent.
