Why did we attempt the FG?

Unread post by JCline0429 » Sun Oct 07, 2012 7:10 pm

Why did we attempt the FG with just a few seconds left and the lead insurmountable at that point?

Brace yourself...Good question. :o

Looking at the play-by-play, I still don't understand.

Because it was more exciting than a punt?

no inside knowledge - just a guess - we were trying to end the game and Elon kept calling TOs even though they had no hope of winning the game - a little "well OK then, take this" ---

Jerry Moore said in the postgame that it was just to give Martin a chance to do something special.

Yeah I did hear that from Coach and the "something special" was probably initiated by Elon's timeouts ---

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was thrilled to see Sam line up for a 61 yard fg. That would have been special! It was kind of out of the norm.

Think back to the App/Wofford Halloween game. Coach Ayers kept calling useless timeouts near the end of the game when we were blowing them out. So, as an "Eff you", we threw a TD pass to run it up on them. Basically the same thought process was at work here. I personally wish we threw a pass to the endzone. It's no less than they deserve.

The SCSU game was Jerry telling AE to do whatever he wanted as it was 4th down. So he threw a jump ball in the endzone to his roomate.

To be fair, the SCSU coach admitted his folly after the game.

I would say an "eff u" to the F-Elon's and a way for Martin to try attempt something special... there have to be NFL scouts keeping up with Sam...

I don't remember the time outs at the end of the Wofford Halloween game, but I do remember this situation at the end of the SCSU playoff game. Coach Pugh started calling time-outs to stop the clock and they turned Armanti loose with another TD throw. Even coach Pugh said "yeah, we deserved it" in an interview after the game.
