Our Players

Unread post by Capt. Ed » Sat Oct 24, 2015 7:06 am

Of all the highlights of our trip to Boone, the one that made me the proudest to be a Mountaineer happened in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Express.

Two young men came through the door wearing App clothing and headed for the elevator. They looked familiar but I wasn't sure so I asked them if they were players. They both stopped, grinned, and said yes. I apologized for not knowing who they were and asked their names.

I'm Marcus Cox said one, and I'm Terrence Upshaw said the other. I couldn't believe it and the silly grin on my face caused them to look at each other and grin.

They were there to visit Marcus's Mom before the game. Neither showed any impatience as we chatted, both were extremely engaging, confident, relaxed, and patient. I gushed over how much fun they and the team have been over the last two years, how proud we are of them, and how much we appreciate what they've done for App. They just smiled and let me be a silly old man as I rambled on. They acted as if they could talk all day.

A little while later, they came back through the lobby accompanied by Marcus's mother. She is every bit as charming as her son and very beautiful by the way.

She volunteered to take pics of me with her son and Terrence and we had a good time cutting up with her and the young men.

When we parted I had a feeling of gratitude for these young men and their parents. They are everything we could hope for in our athletes. Physically gifted, intelligent, gentlemen on and off the field, humble, and in general just class acts. They represent all of us in an extremely positive manner.

It is good to be a Mountaineer!

That matches what I've seen and heard from those two and so many others. Our coaches are coaching much more than football and recruiting much more than stats!
If serving is beneath you, then leading is beyond you.

In his interview in the media day video, you could tell Upshaw is a genuine guy that just loves to play football.

Thanks for sharing Capt. Ed! I've not met a single player that hasn't thanked us (fans) for support. This IS a special bunch!
