Top 25 Finish

Unread post by appbio91 » Tue Dec 22, 2015 9:02 am

Saw one of the players tweet that suggested this is something on the radar. What do you guys think? I think we are certainly getting attention with the first year FBS bowl win talk but I am not sure. I doubt it will happen especially since stAte got throttled by an 8 win USA team.

Can't see it happening, but hopefully the mini-PR campaign will at least get us on people's radars and get us more votes. Doesn't help us when teams like WKU win - have to figure we would have taken some of their votes if they'd lost.

I expect to see some votes, maybe be near the top of the "Others Receiving Votes" list, but making the final Top25 will rely largely on how the rest of the bowls play out. I also think that the loss to stAte is not as much of a deterrent as the closeness of the bowl win. Yes the bowl win is very impressive, and I don't mean to take anything away from it, but in the eyes of the jaded voters, App was a 7 point favorite in front of a highly partisan crowd and barely squeaked through with a 1 point win. If it comes down a vote between App and a similarly ORV team that has won a bowl game handily, I can see App falling just outside.

I really don't believe the voters go into that much detailed research for teams 20-40 - the one shining beacon is RECORD - NUMBER of WINS --- 11-2 is really the main indicator and most would know one loss was to Clemson and APP won their bowl game

Biggest problem is our bowl game was so daggum early. By the time the final polls come out our game will be a distant memory. That said I do expect more than just a couple votes in both the AP and coaches polls and I wouldn't be surprised if we did sneak in at #25 in either. 11-2 is nothing to sneeze at, as of right now there are only 3 other G5 schools that have the oppotunity to finish with 2 or fewer losses.

I have often wondered why they don't move these early bowl games to a later date. Seems to me there are plenty of dates that these smaller bowls could be worked in before the NC. I think they would garner much more attention and possibly some more $$ at the later dates. That Saturday before the NC would be a great feeder into that Monday night.

Here's hoping for the top 25 finish!

Probably tougher to get people to travel then. Students back in school, people back at work and ramping up for the new year - not the time most are planning vacations.

Not going to happen.
I just can't see that many teams in the top 25 and others receiving votes ahead of us losing their bowl games creating a spot for us to slide in. We will likely end the season receiving votes. If we had beaten Arkansas State, we would be top 25 for sure.

I'd love to be surprised though!

I agree with WVAPPeer. I think that it will come down to someone looking at our record and who we lost to. If Clemson wins the Nat'l Title then I think that helps our cause.

I think the idea is to overcome the saturation later in the bowl season. Similar to why South Carolina is so in love with playing that first prime time Thursday game in September...everyone's thirsty for football and you're the only drink of water on tv. There were I think 4 bowls that day, we were on in prime time. Unlike yesterday's USF vs WKU game that was on at 2 in the afternoon on a Monday. Can't imagine that gained any sizeable ratings.

I agree with WVAPP, 11-2 will get us in somewhere 23 - 25.

SOS was very weak, record of opponents was 71-89 (44%)

Only chance at top 25 was to finish 12-1.

We beat 2 teams with a winning record (Ga. Southern and Ohio) and though we won, we did not look very good the last couple games against S. Alabama and Ohio.

Great season but not Top 25 as much as I would like.

I think we have a realistic shot at the T25, but I'd imagine the WKU game yesterday hurts us a bit. Handling a American team like that is probably a bit more impressive.

However Ohio did loose some pretty bad, but they did beat Marshall, NIU and came close at Minnesota.

You probably are correct but I still feel that the majority of voters don't take time to research who teams in the 25-40 range lost to - nor the records of their opponents - basically it is a look at the season W-L and bowl game win/loss ---

Well, can't do it all in the first year. Gotta save some goals for the next year.

I'm more optimistic about a top 25 preseason ranking in 2016.

I think we will be in the 27-33 range. sTate killed our chances for this year. Excited about our future.
