I refrain from gratifying myself these ways. SOS is in play here.

I was just looking at that, and as I thought there schedule wasnt all that much better. The best team they beat was 8-5 Pitt.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

If we were to play head to head, I could see us beating the bottom 3 soundly this season and NC State being a close game.
The top 2 on the other hand, would give us fits.

I was not looking at any one particular team. I was thinking amongst the crowd.

I think 8-5 Pitt is the best team any of them (outside of us) beat. Duke's best W was 7-6 VT. NCSU, thus far is 5-7 ODU and S. bama. ECU and the others, frankly this year don't warrant mention.

Still not sure why people around here seemed so impressed by Duke. There were many who actually thought they were the best team in the state before UNC scored a thousand on them.

What gets us beat against P5s is athletic mismatches, and Duke wouldn't present that. They're a well-coached but athletically limited team that rarely beats themselves. We'd need to avoid our penchant for shooting ourselves in the foot, but if we could, we'd have a good shot against them.

I don't believe this OP was saying this represented the BEST or Strongest teams in the state. Its simply a ranking of the best winning percentage. Just naked numbers. We can enjoy that without worrying about SOS or who would beat who head to head.

It's a good thing Central beat A&T, otherwise the Aggies would claim the best D-1 record in NC. :D

But thanks to the Eagles, they were 10-2 rather than 11-1.

We'd lose pretty soundly to UNC but have a good chance against the others. Crush UNC-Concord.

Sorry I don't buy that - I'm not saying we would absolutely beat them but they would not soundly beat us - not here at the end of the season - our defense is too good ---

Do huh? Did you see how Baylor ran against the Heels? And, they only ran because their 5th string QB was hurtin' (& their top 4 QBs were out). To me, their run game looked suspiciously similar (like to App's).

Based on what I saw last night, App vs. UNC might result in a similar score to the bowl game; I'd say 59 - 32 App.

Some people having some fun on this thread...

UNC was the best team in the state this year by a wide margin. But App would have been able to compete on more or less even terms against any of the rest.

Just curious, what makes you say by a wide margin? They lost to a very bad South Carolina as well as the only 2 legit opponents they played - clemson and baylor. Yes, Duke was ranked when UNC played them but they hadn't beat anyone with a winning record - and If I recall correctly Duke's win over VT was while VTs QB was still out.

UNC got where they were this year by beating up on bad football teams (inluding 2 FCS). That was evidenced in them not even sniffing the top 4 prior to the ACC championship. Further, their rankings only increased as the year went on and it looked likely they would be in the ACC championship - ESPN can't let a P5 champion not be in the top 15. Thats sacrilege.

I would have liked to see us line up against them this year. I like others here, do not think it would have been a blow out - rather more along the lines of our games with ECU.

Yes, I am having fun. And, not only that, I completely disagree with you.

We would kick some Tarheel butt this year. But, they won't play us. Too bad.

Are they skeered?

If Clemson and Baylor were "the only two legit opponents they played," then which of App's opponents were "legit"?
