Wofford Schedule

Unread post by Snwbrdro » Sun Oct 14, 2012 8:22 pm

I don't see all the hype in this wofford team. I understand there ranking because they had not lost till yesterday. But let's look at who they have played. Liberty d3, Gardner Webb weak, and 3 of the bottom feeders of the socon are their wins. GSU , first real competition, handled them. Yes they have put up huge yardage number and their wins have been convincing but one must look at the competition. If we had the same schedule, everyone would be buying tickets to Frisco right now. I think they have at least 2 more losses coming looking at who they have left to play in our conference. Even if I wasn't a diehard app fan, I would pick app. With our strength of schedule, ecu an Montana being tough games ad our other tough wins I like our chances in a hyped up scon championship type game. Don't see this one being closer than 2 touchdowns after the 1st qtr. app jumps on them early for once this year! Just my thoughts. Let me know if I am crazy.

Stop EB in his last try at home in Boone like we did 2 yr's ago. Let the screws out early on the O in the 1st qtr.

I hope we're scouting their chop blocking this week but it's risky with all our injuries.

You are crazy, they put up 82 on Lincoln University :? ...wait OK..I am crazy too. I agree with you. If our D can do a better job against the option this time, I think Apps will win Saturday.

easy for us to say but not always easy to do ---
1. get the lead on them
2. stop EricB
3. be ready for misdirection - reverses - fakes, etc.

I'm gonna disagree. We haven't really stopped anyone all year. The last option team destroyed us. We have a depleted defensive line and that will be where this game is won. We don't play their strength of schedule, and I really think this will be their chance to finally win again in Boone. For us to win our defense will have to play the best game of the season and the d'line will have to be herculean letting our linebackers be free to make plays. Stop the full back dive, string the option out, get penetration, and be aware of the play action pass. The offense needs to play and score at every opportunity with a sense of urgency.

Well, a couple things are different from the last time we played a triple O team. First, we have our starting DBs back, along with Price. Big difference right there. Second, our D has made stops too; when they counted ... like that 2nd & 1 against Sammy. Mostly, our team of freshmen are freshmen no longer. After going through that baptism by fire that was The Citadel, they're experienced. I am certain we have watched a lot of film on Woffie's TO. I feel good about Saturday's game & our chances. Bring it on!

No question that Wofford has played an incredibly weak schedule. They entered the game with Georgia Southern 5-0 but their 5 wins came against teams with 4 DI wins combined. They were averaging 53.5 points per game through the first 4 games, thanks in large part to hanging 82 on DII Lincoln. In the past two games with Furman and GSU, they have averaged 14.5.

That being said, I am still very concerned by them, even with their recent history at KBS. I never like playing a team coming off a loss because they need this game as badly as we do. While I expect a significant improvement over what we saw against The Citadel, I don't think we will hold them down as well as Furman and GSU did. We will have to put points on the board to win this one.

I definitely think we should give them all the respect they deserve. If not they will be overlooked as the Citadel was and we will get hit in the face. This just feels like another Halloween night game, except a little earlier start.

The Sports Network recap from the weekend article addresses the weak schedules some teams have played and Wofford is called out by name. Here's the link to the whole article.

Wofford has played us much tougher than any other Socon team in the last 4 or 5 years. So it doesn't matter what their schedule is or what our rankings are, this team can be dangerous. If we don't play disciplined assignment defense they will beat us. We have been able to get up and play good in the games that we expected to be close so I think we will be prepared for them this year. It just worries me how we didn't think the Citadel was that good, another triple option team and we know what happened at our home that week. I would love to send Eric home for good with a long lasting loss from us. :D

It will be of utmost importance for our defense to get some quick 3 and outs. Wofford's grinding style will wear you down with a lot of sustained drives. Offense has to score when we get possessions. I agree with others; put Kimbrough on Britenstein and hit him every play.

Woff's board is complaining that their QB is really slow and the option looked slow to develop against GSU, said GSU's D was just much faster than their O. Would assume that our D could be as fast, hopefully, but who knows with all the injuries.

I saw the first half of the Elon-Wofford game - haven't seen GSU - and I commented that Wofford didn't seem to have the speed with the QB and WBs I had seen them have in the past - but that was just for one half and EricB was torching them up the gut ---

In the post game, Ayers said he replaced Kass with Weimer, who's a bit quicker, to give the offense a chance to get to the edge and to rest Kass who apparently took quite a few shots against GSU. Weimer did go 2-3 passing (Kass 1-5 passing) and averaged 5 yards a carry. I'll repeat the mantra that I had before the Citadel, make the initial tackle and hit the pitch man as much as possible. Force their offense to play behind the chains and get off the field on 3rd downs. I sure as hell hope the defense has learned something since the Citadel game. Don't think I can watch another sub-par effort.

Coach Ayers spoke at our Touchdown Club two weeks ago and stated that he knew very little about his team because of the schedule. Didn't say why he scheduled so weak. He did say his team had great character. ... And they'll have to be stopped past third down because they are notorious for lining up on 4th down at any place on the field.

yep...their 4 to our 3 downs...they rarely punt and pass for that matter but...im more concerned about the deep pass after being lulled to sleep...ala 2007 at wofford. last year we beat ourselves but hold eb to just a couple of yards per gain(if possible) and if we do plays other than runnin back up the middle(wtf) and we will play strong and tough.

Yes you are right but u also have to control the edges with a safety coming up, Ayers loves WC to play in the outside lanes, do that and you will control them. Elon game was the only time I can remember WC running the ball up the middle so much maybe they designed it that way to counter Elon.

We are going to need some penalties and turnovers (which they seldom do) in order to stop them. They'll chip away with a few yards here, a few there, a long pass or two here, a 4th and short conversion there. They will keep our O off the field, shorten the game and limit our possessions. We'll need to score almost every drive. I hate playing Wofford, it's so frustrating.
