Two people involved in the decision tell The Associated Press that the NCAA won't allow the creation of new bowl games for the next three years.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the NCAA had not made a formal announcement.

Last season, three teams with losing records were placed in bowl games because there were not enough .500 teams to fill the record 40 bowls. The NCAA's football oversight committee last week recommended a three-year moratorium on sanctioning new postseason games and it was approved by the Division I Council.

ESPN.com was first to report the moratorium.

Three cities — Austin, Texas; Charleston, South Carolina; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — were in the process of trying to gain approval for new bowl games.

I am shocked! The NCAA made a sensible decision on something.

Bowl games come and go. Charleston's bowl game will eventually happen. Just bad timing right now.

Maybe they can arrange for two 5-7 teams to play each other.

Makes sense after so many 5-7 teams ended up bowling last season.

There were three 5-7 teams that made bowl games last year and they were selected by APR.

2014 had 81 FBS teams with six wins and 76 bowl spots. 2015 had 77 FBS teams with six wins and 80 bowl spots.

However, existing bowl games can move to different cities, so Charleston isn't dead yet.

Tie ins are really damaging the bowl system. Many teams are relegated to go to one of a select few destinations. For example, an App v Cincinnati bowl would do really well in Nashville...but bc of tie ins that couldn't happen. Ideal split in geography, fans could travel, but no.

I argued on ESPN Upstate yesterday that this moratorium limits new bowls, which hurts the smaller conferences that usually get selected for upstart bowls, but that it may not be a bad thing...ie does seeing a woeful 6-6 Georgia State limp into a bowl do anything for the perception of the Sunbelt...no.

Still think that 7-5 should be minimum to get in bowl game. If you lose, you still have a winning record. Love App but might not get too excited about a 6-6 App squad taking on a lower tier AAC or CUSA squad .

Understand the overall number of bowls is arguably too many, but I do wish we could find a way to get that Charleston bowl going. Eastern portion of the Sun Belt really needs some more convenient destinations, and that will only become more of an issue once Coastal joins.

I agree - we could have gone 11-1 last year with the only loss to #2 Clemson and we still have played in one the minor SB tie-ins - Actually we could have gone 12-0 and been in the same boat ---

Disagree, if a G5 school ever goes 12-0 with a win over a P5 champion they are going to a New Year's Six bowl.

As I said on the Sun Belt board. I have no problem with more bowls. I'm a junkie. Can't get enough.

should be - what if Houston, who went to the NY6 went 13-0 (instead of 12-1) you really think APP at 12-0 would be chosen over them - us from the SunBelt - them from the American with a conference championship game victory - Nope!!!

Yeah but what if there's an 11-1 or 12-0 sunbelt school and a 10-2 AAC....the AAC is gonna get it.

I agree, last year that would have happened. If we establish ourselves in the future even in the Sun Belt we have a shot.

Well, in the eyes of those who choose the bowls, we'll never be worthy of that. What you're talking about requires a complete overhaul in perception. Selection committees still *believe* AAC > MW/MAC/CUSA > SunBelt.

Use logic, how would a 12-0 G5 team with a win over a P5 champion who would be ranked very highly, likely top five not be the highest ranked G5.

How likely is it TWO G5 teams do that in the same year?
