Lindy's Rankings

Lindy's College Football Magazine has us ranked as #72. I found it interesting that we were ranked ahead of Oregon State, Georgia Southern, Syracuse, Air Force, Boston College, Air Force, Colorado State, Wyoming, Memphis, Iowa State, UConn, Marshall, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Purdue, East Carolina, Rice, New Mexico, SMU, Army, and Hawaii. These are household names in college football.

Is there anyone you would NOT consider a "household name"?

I will say this...I am happy we came in above those teams, however those teams are not that impressive to be ranked higher than, which might be the reason I am happy...Happy we are thought of to at least be better than the teams we could probably beat.

With all of the momentum that we are riding at this moment, I would probably be disappointed if we finish #72 this coming season. I see us having a realistic shot at finishing somewhere in the 30's by season's end.

I'd love to crack the Top 25, but without probably an undefeated or 1 loss max season that won't happen. 10-2 I agree we are in the 30s with a shot to win big in our bowl game and be top 25 for the final ranking. 9-3 no lower than the 40s. 8-4 or worse....Well that just isn't happening

one mag I was thumbing through this weekend had us somewhere in the mid 50s - of course, we all know none of this pre-season stuff truly matters except that writers are taking notice ---

We have debated and beaten too absolute death the rankings thing. I have always considered preseason rankings to be pretty stupid and once you get in the 20's, 30's,etc it is all just a guess anyway. Just for pure fun and wild ass speculation I would not have us lower than the top half of BCS teams. As far as the household names goes I would personally not consider any of these teams in that light. Again, just for pure speculation and without a game played by anybody I can't see any of these teams as better than App next season. Some of these teams are in P5 conferences but we all know that just by association only.

Umm, I was just trying to add something positive to the Yosef's Cabin message board instead of the bitching about what color shirts to wear to the Old Dominion game or discussion about the problems in the Sophomore QB's performance against the number 2 ranked football team in the nation.

It is positive, and something we should be proud of, considering it's our second official year in FBS. People are taking notice, but not to the point that they will put us where I feel (as a fan) we should be (the 40s).

Plenty of positives with our football program. Just wondering what the standard is for "household names" if the likes of New Mexico and Rice make the cut.
And being "ranked" #72 isn't really a positive when it is well below where most would have ranked us at the end of last season. There are maybe 2-3 teams in that list that anyone would even consider ranking ahead of App.

It is just for fun. No way to rank a team that has not played a game yet against teams that have not played yet.

I think anything outside the top 40 isn't necessarily disrespectful, just poorly researched.
Where we land in these things at the end of the season is more important and we were 33 in the AP poll in January if I remember correctly.

I guarantee you sports writers don't do much (if any) research outside the top 25. They just don't have time. Nor would taking the time to do so be worth it.

I hope that we at least get some votes for the AP top 25 when that poll comes out. That being said...just for kicks...let's say we are at "33" in the initial AP ranking and let's say, "just for fun" that we are able to knock off our first three opponents, how far up the rankings do you guys think we could theoretically climb?

3-0 could be huge, how high App climbs in the polls would depend on Tennessee and their Battle in Bristol outcome. If UT were to thump VaTech in front of 160,000+ at Bristol Speedway the same Saturday that App would beat The U in Boone? I could see top 15 for the good guys.
That a whole lot of massive gigantic huge IF happening. Not impossible, but not probable either, by any stretch. The possibility is why they play the games on the field.

The Volunteers will trounce the Hokies.
