And yes, this means that Miami will likely be ranked when they visit Boone, at least in this poll.

Miami will be ranked when they come to the Rock. We should have been ranked at the end of last year.

Pre-season polls typically are not worth the paper they're printed on, but the expectations make me a bit nervous. I have faith in our coaches and players, but damn, I liked being the underdog!
The national recognition sure is nice though! If Miami cracks the top 25 and we knock them off, that would be HUGE!! I may not remember much that happens the rest of that Saturday.

Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
Why is this poll not worth the paper it is printed on? At the end of last year we were generally in the 30's and both Miami and Tennessee were, in general, about where they are in this poll. If anything, we may be a bit low but I will take it to get some votes. I think that is fair. Assuming that to be true, why be nervous if that is where we should be unless you think we are going to go out and lay an egg?MtnDevil95 wrote:Pre-season polls typically are not worth the paper they're printed on, but the expectations make me a bit nervous. We still are the underdogs against UT and The U based on this poll so let's continue our upward progress and take these guys down and let the college football nation know we are here!

Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
I like to check to see who the voters are in the coaches poll. Looks like Satt is a voter this year, so I expect that's where at least some of our votes come from. Other Sun Belt coaches with votes are Joey Jones (USA), Doug Martin (NM State), Trent Miles (Ga. State), and Everett Withers (Texas State).

We all know that preseason polls are not perfect but here is an accompanying article that leads me to believe that App could be that "unranked team" that breaks into the top 10.

Higher the better my mama always said. I would rather be preseason ranked where we are as opposed to like 40 and off the radar. Imagine a 3-1 start (at least)! That would help offset the dog conference games. It's all just fun

Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
Too much focus on this board towards Tennessee and Miami game. Would a Miami win be huge? Sure. But don't think the trip to Akron will be easy, or that ODU doesn't remember that ass beating from last year. Georgia Southern ended last year on a high note too. Trips to Statesboro are never easy. Troy gave us some problems last year too. I know it's all for fun, and I doubt the players and coaches only care about these two games. Just don't want everyone thinking a 11-1 or 10-2 season would be easy as a whole.
As a fan though it is exciting to see App mentioned in a poll. Whether it's relevant or not, gets the name out. I am just going to take it one game at a time and let the rest just happen.

I don't think it will be easy, but I do think we should have a goal of winning 11 games again this year. That means we did two of the following four things: beat Miami, beat Tennessee, went 8-0 in the SBC, won our bowl game. Two of those four make for a very successful season in my eyes, and it's certainly something our team can achieve.

The coaches and players have stated it over and over again. The Goal is to always win the Conference Championship.
Anything else is just icing on the cake.

They've stated the first part. I don't think I've heard anyone say the second part, and I'm not sure I think they believe it. I certainly hope they don't.S.Lewis15 wrote:The coaches and players have stated it over and over again. The Goal is to always win the Conference Championship.

I agree, I won't be surprise if we go anywhere from 10-2 to 7-5 this year. We won three games by a TD or less last year and footballs bounce funny./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:Too much focus on this board towards Tennessee and Miami game. Would a Miami win be huge? Sure. Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
This is by far the most difficult schedule we have ever faced. We could put a better product on the field this season but not come close to the same record as last year. Even though we miss StAte, trips to Troy, Georgia Southern, Lafayette, and AKron will be stern tests. We are more than capable of winning each of those games and will be favored to do so. Frankly, those are the games that are more important to our season's success.Saint3333 wrote:I agree, I won't be surprise if we go anywhere from 10-2 to 7-5 this year. im not content with the chant, "we're 43...we're 43!!!" heres how you solve that...go volunteer an ass-whippin' in knoxville and then take care of old dominion...then we'll be ranked when the hurricants blow into town. seems simple to me...and might i add...hottt, hottt, hottt!

The only game that matters at this point is the next one. Bring on Big Orange.

Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
Every coach I have ever heard says the most important game is the next one. Well Tennessee is our next game and they are ranked #10 in the nation. Seems very appropriate to be all over that game as a fan. This is what we live for as a supporter of a very successful program. These are the reasons why I wanted us to move up to big boy football. Let's embrace it without people talking us down or trying to make us feel like we shouldn't get all excited to be playing on opening night of major college football against a top 10 ranked team, in Prime Time, on The SEC Network with some chance to pull off the upset. This is the big stage and the eyes of the college football world will be watching us. I have been waiting a long time for this type of situation./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:Too much focus on this board towards Tennessee and Miami game.
Doesn't get any better than that. I look forward to it and will be thoroughly enjoying the night. I will not apologize for my excitement.
After UT I will gladly turn my focus towards ODU.

Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
I understand the excitement of playing Tennessee. Coach Jones is probably the most excited. Hell I was pissed when they changed it to Thursday, cancelling my opportunity to attend. I am very much pumped for Tennessee. Also pumped to see Miami come to Boone. Never wanted anyone to feel they shouldn't be excited. That was not my intention with the post.AtlAppMan wrote:Every coach I have ever heard says the most important game is the next one. Think back to the 2007 season. After we beat Michigan many thought we would then go undefeated, me being one of them. What happened? Wofford beat us. Then Georgia Southern ended our home winning streak. This one hurt me the most. I just wanted to point out that there are other games that we should be concerned about...even if we beat Tennessee and/or Miami.
I also think polls are pointless outside of determining the 4 playoff teams, but would I be excited to see a number next to our name...Hell yes.

Re: App receives 4 votes in preseason coaches poll
This staff has proven to be adept at getting the players to focus on the game before them. This schedule provides the ultimate test in that regard. September 1 can't get here soon enough. Can't wait to see how this squad rises to the challenge. Not sure in my 47 years following the Apps that I've been more excited for the season to begin./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:I understand the excitement of playing Tennessee.
