Why ASN stinks for ASU in ATL

Unread post by AtlAppMan » Wed Aug 17, 2016 4:44 pm

Here is why I think ASN stinks for coverage of App State football in Atlanta. Atlanta is the second largest TV market in the Sun Belt footprint behind Dallas/Ft Worth.

None of our games carried by ASN in the last two years were carried in the Atlanta market. Here is the example for this year and what they are carrying instead of our game. This is typical of what they did in the last two years, either carried some totally irrelevant game for the ATL viewing audience in our time slot or didn't carry anything at all.

Sept 10 - App vs ODU (not carried but instead they are showing Bowling Green vs North Dakota)
Sept 24 - App @ Akron (not carried)

Atlanta represents one of the largest alumni bases for our school outside of NC. Atlanta is also the largest alumni base for two of our conference mates, Georgia State and Georgia Southern.

I'm pretty sure all of our games, which aren't already announced for other networks such as SEC, ASN Network or ESPN/2/U are on ESPN3. And for clarification, ASN is American Sports Network and they have a deal with C-USA, which is why the ODU game is on it, not really something we can control

I will be at the ODU game so that is not my problem and yes it is on ESPN3. However, my point is it is NOT carried in Atlanta. So your point about ASN being C-USA's friend doesn't exactly hold water either.

I'm not sure what you mean about my point not holding water. I'm not arguing with you, just explaining it as I understand it. Because we are playing ODU a TV game might have been a more desirable outcome than an ESPN3 game. We are NOT aligned with ASN, but C-USA is.

As far as Akron, I would not be surprised if ESPN3 doesn't pick that one up since the MAC, like the Sun Belt leverage ESPN3

I've also noticed with ASN, that their actual distribution changes at the 11th hour. Like it may not be showing as available for ATL now, but you might find that it is toward game day.

Maybe I didn't make my original point well.

I know ASN is aligned with C-USA. I know our games are on ESPN3 or other ESPN network due to SBC deal.

My point was the App-ODU game is not being carried in Atlanta by ASN even though there are numerous reasons why they should carry it. And to show how bad a decision I think that is I pointed out that they are carrying another game at same time that would have far less appeal than App-ODU.

I live in the RDU area and we routinely get ASN games on two different local cable channels which are ASN affiliates, I notice that they offen differ on game day from what was previously advertised.

The SBC picked up and affiliation with ASN earlier this month. As part of that deal, all SunBelt ASN games would be available for broadcast on ESPN3 as well.

Don't know what they were watching, but my wife and son watched part of the first half from the hotel in VB.
