Less than an hour after the announcement and we already have to cut off entries for the joke contest. This one cannot be topped.MAD Doctor wrote:Isn't this a conflict of interest since Dollar General supplies Georgia Southern's uniforms?

No, I agree, but it's no worse than GoDaddy. Either is the kind of name sportswriters use as a go-to when they want to rehash a column about how there are too many bowl games.Yosef84 wrote:Hey, I'm glad someone is sponsoring the bowl but I have to say that "Dollar General Bowl" is about as UN-sexy a bowl name as I can imagine. I'm sure my ego can survive it if we wind up going there, but am I the only one thinking this?
I agree but of course the sponsors are willing to pay more to have the bowl just named after them. Which is how you get things like a bowl that was well established as the Peach Bowl briefly called the Chick-fil-a Bowl, giving up on decades of brand recognition. It sucks, but like everything else, $$ talks.TheMackAttack wrote:I think that all bowl games should have a name independent of the sponsor. The Dollar General Bowl and the GoDaddy Bowl are both stupid names. Call it the Mobile Bay Bowl or the Gulf Coast Bowl or Battleship Bowl, I don't care what they call it as long as it has a name that it can keep as long as the bowl exists no matter who the sponsor is.
I think the "Beef O Brady's Bowl" was much worse sounding than the "Dollar General Bowl"Yosef84 wrote:Hey, I'm glad someone is sponsoring the bowl but I have to say that "Dollar General Bowl" is about as UN-sexy a bowl name as I can imagine. These types of bowl games get renamed all the time, and Dollar General is a very successful, growing business. If they can be a main sponsor in NASCAR I think they'd do well sponsoring a college Bowl Game.
Blame the Sun/John Hancock Bowl for doing this first with removing the bowl name, though to their credit that only lasted a few years and since they have maintained the word Sun in the title.EastHallApp wrote:I agree but of course the sponsors are willing to pay more to have the bowl just named after them. Also, as often as bowls change sponsors, it's nice to have a name attached to the bowl itself so fans actually know what/where it is. I guarantee you most fans who see the Dollar General Bowl in their TV listings in December will have no idea that it's a game that's been around for nearly 20 years under various other names.
That's one thing I will say for the Camellia Bowl - at least it sounds like a real bowl game. Might not be one everyone's heard of, but at least when they do, the name doesn't elicit mockery.
