Dear Appalachian Community:

After an exciting beginning to the Mountaineer football season, we are preparing for our first two home games. This Saturday at 3:30 p.m. we will host Old Dominion at The Rock, and the following Saturday, Sept. 17, at noon, Miami University.

We are expecting record attendance to the much-anticipated Miami game and preparing for a pep rally on Friday evening, Sept. 16, from 6-10 p.m.

You will soon receive an announcement from Athletics with details about the pep rally. Prior to that communication, I want to make you aware of a one-time exception to the university’s tailgating policy. The official memorandum is below.

I hope you will join me in bringing our campus and town together to celebrate the Mountaineer spirit, support Appalachian’s student-athletes, enjoy the challenge of competition and show pride for our university.

What? Calling it Miami University instead of the University of Miami? Otherwise, I'm not sure what.

Meh. No biggie.

Yeah, no big deal. It's technically incorrect, but anyone who is receiving this and thinks she meant the RedHawks rather than the Hurricanes hasn't been paying much attention and probably won't be coming to the game anyway.

The Miami University Redhawks fans might disagree. These boards get tied in knots when someone mispronounces Appalachian, much less when someone confuses our school with another one.

Not that anyone has ever mistaken us for Appalachian Bible College of Mt Hope WV or Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, VA. Actually that second one has happened but not in reference to sports.

Aren't they University of Miami Coral Gables? If so nobody says that. Bit of slack.

Having our family coaching roots at Miami University, I can say, it's an all too common mistake, given she's from up in that area. Below the MAC belt, Miami U get's called U of Miami. But, yeah, she should have double checked.

I've seen posters on message boards refer to Miami U as UMOH, which is of course ridiculous.

I heard Appy state Thursday night so much it was sickening!

Who gives a s___. Much bigger things to think about in life. Everyone makes mistakes and I don't care about that one bit. I say, bring on the U!!!!!

It is just the University of Miami. The main campus is in Cora Gables, the Med school and hospital are in downtown Miami campus and then there is the Marine science campus on Key Byscane.

I think her mistake is that she didn't proof read the letter. I doubt she wrote it.

Geez, I had to read it three times to pick it up.
