Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
Finally, game over and we win our first baseball game ever in San Marcos. 3-2 W on Holderbach 2 run shot! Aside from one inning yesterday our pitching was pretty good. Friday and Sunday starters only yielded 1 run each. Team flies back tomorrow. Sun Belt looks very competitive early.

First ever baseball win in San Marcos.
Now we're like 3-21 all time versus Texas State.

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
We played well enough to win the series after never winning a game out there. Hopefully we are fully focused on Queens Tuesday with CCU looming next weekend.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
Although we didn't get the series win, it's an improvement from previous series out there. And, as mentioned before, that 8 run inning Saturday was the only major issue with pitching and I think we all still believe in Steensma. However, Texas State hasn't been lighting up the scoreboard this year so I don't want to get too overconfident in our pitching. Next weekend will be very telling!

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
This is for 311 - I was watching the game, middle innings before the lightning delay and App got the first two men on (1st and 2nd) no outs - bottom 3rd of the order coming up - no bunt, no moving the runners up - three straight fly-ball outs to the outfield - I immediately thought of you and if you were watching ---
I am not questioning our coach's strategy because he knows his team, but I just had a different philosophy.
I was attending a baseball coaches clinic (many years ago) and a couple of very well known and successful college coaches were involved with a QA. Both said they did not bunt because "We get 27 outs and they are too precious to give an out away".

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
I missed yesterdays game unfortunately! I agree with you, get the guys on, get them over, and get them in, especially with the bottom of the lineup. I believe you mentioned a couple weeks ago that who knows, you get a sac bunt down and it could turn into a hit or the pitcher could sail the throw!!! We are leaving runs on the board by not sacrificing.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 11:25 amThis is for 311 - I was watching the game, middle innings before the lightning delay and App got the first two men on (1st and 2nd) no outs - bottom 3rd of the order coming up - no bunt, no moving the runners up - three straight fly-ball outs to the outfield - I immediately thought of you and if you were watching ---

Coach knows his team, maybe he wants the risk of scoring more runs due to the bullpen issues? That would be my guess. Huge win yesterday, I saw where Holderbach set a HR distance record with his blast. 465'!!!

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
I would have bunted. With Church & Holderbach on base, Moquin at the plate with no outs, I feel like you have to put that pressure on the defense and also set yourself up so that a ground ball, sac fly or wild pitch can score that run, but I'm old school baseball.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 11:25 amThis is for 311 - I was watching the game, middle innings before the lightning delay and App got the first two men on (1st and 2nd) no outs - bottom 3rd of the order coming up - no bunt, no moving the runners up - three straight fly-ball outs to the outfield - I immediately thought of you and if you were watching ---

As many wild pitches get thrown in these games that would have absolutely been the smart play. Analytics are really stupid half the time. Too much looking at a big folder and less going with your gut.BUTCH1991 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 12:56 pmI would have bunted. Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
I would have bunted, too. Moquin seems to be a decent hitter and I’m guessing our coaches expected him to do better than strike out. Unfortunately, the two hitters behind him are struggling. That’s why I would have bunted Aguilar and then with Zamora at the plate hope for a breakdown in Texas State’s defense.
In my opinion, light-hitting left handed batters with good speed should frequently bunt. I’m puzzled why Aguilar doesn’t bunt more often.

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
Hey - many of us have taught high school kids (and younger) to bunt - that should not be a problem with college players ---

Unfortunately that's not today game. Load - Drop - Hit upwards. Give me guys that can get on base via walks or other means. Players from HS to pros strike out way too much IMO.

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
Getting on base isn't our problem. We get on base at an unreal clip and are at the top in OBP% across the nation. Something like 49 HBP in 15 games is wild.Appmountaineers19 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2024 5:57 pmUnfortunately that's not today game. Load - Drop - Hit upwards. Problem is, we don't get them over and in. Everyone playing in college should be able to sac bunt. It's part of practice, BP, cage work. Pollard would make us show bunt all the time, and sometimes it was just to create better angles to hit, ie- move the 3rd basemen in and rope a single in the 5 hole. Or pull the 1st baseman off the bag to create a larger lead for runner on first so he had a better chance of being safe on fake bunt and steal. Real genius stuff!

Re: 2024 Baseball Mega Thread
Just turned the game on to see the 4th HBP. Yep I've coached travel ball pitchers with better control
