Thurber puts out the fire with a perfect stint in the 9th.

After a great win yesterday, the Apps have not shown up for today's game, not even slightly competitive. Pitiful performance thus far, 0-8 bottom of 5th

Final, 8-2. Still searching for that third starting pitcher. Brill takes the loss with 5 ERs in 2.2 innings.

I think the third starting pitcher will be Thurber. He just eats too many innings and gets people out. He is usually pretty good when he has a fresh inning to work with.

We may lead the nation in walks going back to last year. We fix that we can be a solid team.

Not really, who we play is no excuse. Who we played didn't seem to matter yesterday did it? These 5+ run innings are killing us. I'm not saying we should have won. However, digging ourselves a hole to climb out of is (once again) killing us.JTApps1 wrote:A little harsh considering who we are playing, dont you think?WataugaMan wrote:After a great win yesterday, the Apps have not shown up for today's game, not even slightly competitive. Thats the kind of mentality and attitude I wish to NEVER hear from an Appalachian State program. What happened to anytime, anywhere?JTApps1 wrote:A little harsh considering who we are playing, dont you think?WataugaMan wrote:After a great win yesterday, the Apps have not shown up for today's game, not even slightly competitive. Saying we will play anyone, anywhere is the attitude to have, but to say the performance was pitiful is over the top at this moment. This isn't the 2012 team we're talking abut that was loaded with upper classmen. We had a true freshman making his first career start against the #12 team in the nation. For the weekend we beat the #12 team in one game, had a good chance in another, but then had a lopsided loss with a freshman on the mound. Not a great weekend, but far from pitiful.App91 wrote:Thats the kind of mentality and attitude I wish to NEVER hear from an Appalachian State program. Pitiful was back in the late 90's and early 2000's when we would get swept by ranked teams and lost each game by 15+ runs.

Why? I don't know, maybe I'm missing something , sounds more like a scimmage as opposed to a game. Starting a true freshman in his first career game would be more suited for High Point University as opposed to Maryland. At least it would make more sense to me, then again (once again) maybe I'm missing something. I guess pitiful was being too hard, take way that five run inning and they performed pretty decent (defensively). However, once again, giving away those 5+ run innings along with silent batting at the same time has been a killer. Need to elimate that theme.

Re: Wake moved to Wednesday, Maryland series moved to Emerso
As to Why- One big reason is we are short one weekend starter with Nunn still out. We also were lacking in pitching at times last year so Jones trying to see if the young guys can come in and perform. Losing is never fun but it's better to get through growing pains in the OOC schedule than during the conference games.WataugaMan wrote:"We had a true freshman making his first career start against the #12 team in the nation"

We do have to get the bats going more consistently, but they have shown some signs of life by putting 10 runs on the board vs Wake on Wednesday and 9 on Maryland Saturday. Our fielding % was leading the Sun Belt going into the weekend (conference stats haven't been updated yet) so that hasn't been an issue.

Re: Wake moved to Wednesday, Maryland series moved to Emerso
I don't want to second guess the Coach, however, after that second straight walk to start off the 3rd, I sensed that Brill was starting to lose his mojo. After four runs crossed the plate the change was made. You give the #12 team (or, anyone else for that matter) that advantage you're toast.JTApps1 wrote:As to Why- One big reason is we are short one weekend starter with Nunn still out. I may be missing something, but Brill is not a true freshman. He picthed some last year, although I think sparingly.JTApps1 wrote:Saying we will play anyone, anywhere is the attitude to have, but to say the performance was pitiful is over the top at this moment. I'll also echo the sentiments of others, it doesn't matter that we were playing the #12 team in the nation yesterday. We would have lost to anyone with the number of walks, passed balls and wild pitches our staff is racking up. We'd be better off throwing batting practice fastballs down the pipe and giving our D a chance to make a play.
I harped on this last year and its the same this year - we need a legit pitching coach to teach these guys how to pitch and assist Jonesy in making timely in game decisions with regards to pitching changes. Until such a move is made, we will continue to be a jekyll and hyde team.
Glimpses of what we can be (Saturday) and pull a 180 not 24 hours later.

I must have misread the starting line up as I thought Holden the Freshman from West Forsyth started. So throw out the freshman bit. Of course Brill was almost exclusively an OF for us last year so he isn't exactly a veteran on the mound.

Holden is a true freshman and started on Saturday. Brill is a sophomore and started on Sunday.
We used nine different pitchers over the weekend. Springs (Sr), Howell x2 (Fr), Holden (Fr), Ross (Fr), Thurber (Sr), Brill (So), Watts (Fr), McCann (Jr) and DeVrieze (So). 4 out of 9 are true freshmen. Nunn at this point is an "if" more than a "when". Whaley is MIA. Besides who was already mentioned, our only other upper-classmen pitchers is Burkette, who two seasons ago had an 81 ERA. That's right, eighty-one. Last year's 17.05 was better though.
Billy Jones better hope his young pitching comes through because it looks very possible Dobson and Davis are getting drafted this year.

My bad. Thought you were talking about Sunday's game. On Saturday, I thought Holden settled down well after the 1st inning yips. Speaking of Freshman, how about Ross. He came on in relief and shut them down. I don't even put that 9th inning trouble on him - he souldn't have even started that inning.JTApps1 wrote:I must have misread the starting line up as I thought Holden the Freshman from West Forsyth started. These two have show signs of having a promising future in this young season, just hope we don't wear them out and can keep them healthy for 3 to 4 years.
Ain't it intersting its the Freshman though that are winning games? First we start 4 at wake, then Saturday the Freshman pitchers and Freshman Leonard power us to a W?

I'm not sure. He hasn't pitched since game one versus Canisius. He's had control problems this year though.3rd wrote:Where has Sean Mason been as well?
