Baseball vs. High Point - Game Thread

First pitch is set for just a few minutes from now. Junior LHP Chad Farmer makes his first start of the year for the Apps and will face senior RHP Ryan Retz, who is also making his first start for HPU. I'm predicting no shortage of runs in this one. Cold but otherwise looks like a beautiful day in Boone.

On a somewhat unrelated note, since their loss to us, NC State has gone 5-0. During that stretch, they have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 67-7 with three shutouts. Looks like we lit a fire under the wolf puppies!

HPU puts up 1 in the 1st, Apps coming up to bat. After giving up a double and single to start the inning, Farmer got a double play and a strikeout to stop the damage there.

In All-American Carlos Rodon's next start for State, he surrendered no hits, combining with a reliever for a no hitter. Makes our opener where we put up 6 on him (including 3 homers) look even more impressive.

I'm not too confident in our ability to make the post season this year. High Point is showing us up right now. The conference stretch is going to be brutal.

Stats show J Davis isn't in the starting lineup. Is he injured?

Don't think so. My guess is he's just getting a day off. Also, Head has been playing well as a ulitity man/pinch hitter (despite being picked off 1st today).

High Point does have a good squad, and it's a mid-week game, so I'm not too worried about the result, but we need to be getting better contact on the ball. Not much going through two.

DJ said he has a very minor hamstring strain. Holding him out in the cold weather but said he'd be in the line-up if this were a SoCon game.

Farmer is really laboring out there but this HPU line-up is very strong.

I have a feeling that the mid-week starter role could be a revolving door this season, we will need to win some shootouts during the week. Long way to go in this one but we need to get some runs before it gets away from us.

Another error brings a 3rd run to the plate. 3-0 HPU. That now gives us 11 errors in just our 6th game and it was a hard grounder to Holmes at 3B that could have been an easy double play to end the inning. Pitching is a concern but we have GOT to tighten up in the field and help them out.

HPU has returned the favor with an error on what looked like an easy double play. Apps have men on 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 3rd, top of the line-up.

4-1 High Point, mid 5th. Bats still have not woken up but Josh Wilson did some great work out of the bullpen to hold them where they are. 2 innings, 1 hit, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts.

Double from Leach, sac fly from Calloway to pull the Apps to within 4-3 in the 7th. Pitching change for HPU.

GREAT at-bat by Zumbrook. 2-out double to left on a full count brings in Noah Holmes to tie the score at 4! Another pitching change for High Point, this will be their 4th pitcher in the 7th inning.

He absolutely RIPPED that ball down the 3rd base line.

Yes he did, that thing shot off the left field wall like a bullet! Took away any chance they had to make a play at the plate.

Thurber backs the rally up with a 1-2-3 8th. Let's hope the bats can stay hot and give us a lead for the back end of the 'pen.

Scary moment as Jaylin Davis was hit on the helmet with a pitch while pinch-hitting. However, he popped up and ran to 1st before Coach Jones took him out. Seems to be OK, hopefully not a concussion or anything like that.

Single by Crespo puts the go-ahead run at 2nd. The runner is John Kincaid, running for Jaylin.

Apps lead! 6-4 good guys after another double from Leach, giving him 4 RBI on the afternoon.

Marcello finishes it with 8 pitches... 7 strikes, 1 ball, and a strike out to end it. Wilson was huge today holding them close, and Leach drives in 4 of the 6 runs. That guy is on fire!

Wilson really was the hero today, settling down our team by keeping HPU in check and allowing time for our bats to come to life. Leach may be better than advertised... And that was pretty darn good.
