Beaver Field
Has anyone played on Beaver Field? Couple questions if you have. If you have not make up any crazy answer you like.
1. The only dirt is around the mound, correct?
2. Is it hard/painful/carpet burn potential to slide on the field turf compared to a dirt surface.
3. When running to the fence does the turf change in grip or feel so one knows you are near the fence and one might want to adjust speed before slamming into the fence?

Re: Beaver Field
That was question 4 and I deleted it after I typed it. But I knew someone would bring that up.AppinVA wrote:I've played on several beaver fields. Wait, what's this thread about?
My question was going to be
4. Does it ever get old with the jokes about playing on Beaver Field?

Re: Beaver Field
Well back to the question about sliding - I was talking to a couple of APP players 2 years ago at Elon (they have the same type infield) and asked them - Being an old head I never played nor coached on an artificial surface - I asked them specifically about sliding into base - They all told me there was no difference between the turf and the dirt ---

No more painful to slide on than dirt.
No change in feel from green turf and brown turf of warning track. That's why an effect communication system for outfielders is needed

Thanks for the straight answers. About what I expected but was a bit curious.Blackandgold wrote:Yes only dirt is mound.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote:Has anyone played on Beaver Field? Couple questions if you have. If you have not make up any crazy answer you like.

Now getting back to the ribald answers is fine with me.

Re: Beaver Field
Just had a thought. When the field was first put in, were the base "cutouts" to only "brown" turf? I am pretty sure that was the case. If so when was it changed?
I think I know why but when?

Re: Beaver Field
If what you are asking is if the base area was brown and the rest of the infield green at one point in the history of the stadium then I don't think so. Here is a pic from Oct 2008asutrnr81 wrote:Just had a thought. When the field was first put in, were the base "cutouts" to only "brown" turf? I am pretty sure that was the case. Though the first game was spring 2007 - (taken from http://www.appstatesports.com/ViewArtic ... =204989092)
Appalachian baseball's new home officially opened with the Mountaineers' 6-1 victory over in-state rival Gardner-Webb on April 10, 2007. The stadium was completed in its entirety in fall of 2008 and includes:
---
The spring 2007 season in a not 100% complete stadium may have had a slightly different infield look. That would have given them two seasons to have had what you think they had at one time before the stadium was 100% complete.
Google Earth goes from 30 July 2006 with no construction started to 3 October 2008 with the infield path as the pics above show.

Re: Beaver Field
The only change is the area around home plate was dirt originally, but now has been converted to turf like everything else.asutrnr81 wrote:Just had a thought. Re: Beaver Field
Turf was replaced in fall of 2012. But is exactly the same layout as before. January 2011 the dirt home plate was dug up, and replaced with a home turf plate area.asutrnr81 wrote:Just had a thought.
