Teams chosen by captains:

Gold:

Black:

A few observations from game 1 (Gold wins 6-2)

It appears Rob Marcello has moved to the closer role after the departure of Nate Hyatt to the Braves' farm. I would have thought for sure Ryne Frankoff would be in that role after his performance in the regional, but obviously the coaches like Marcello's velocity enough to put him there. Frankoff looked like he was still in regional form last night, which is a great sign.

I don't know if we'll ever replace the 1-2-3 punch of Arrowood-Grant-Marcello in the rotation, but conventional wisdom says true sophomores Jeffrey Springs and Jamie Nunn have locked down the top two spots and have the potential to be as good as last year's rotation. Newcomer Sam Agnew-Wieland pitched a no-hitter through his 3 innings of work for Gold and was very impressive.

Remember the name Jaylin Davis. The freshman from Greensboro was the first pick in the scrimmage draft for either team. Barring injuries, I don't think we will see him in a Mountaineer uniform for four years. He will be the starting CF*. For MLB fans, think Andrew McCutchen for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

* - EDIT: Forgot about the starting CF last season, Tyler Zupcic. He didn't play last night and I don't think he will for the entire series as he continues to rehab an injury he suffered late last season. I think he and Davis will make up CF and RF with Brandon Burris in left, but who goes where is anybody's guess at this point.

In summary, much like football, this is a very talented but young team. The talent is there to win the SoCon again, it's just a matter of the young players staying consistent for the grind of the college baseball season.

From what I was told the starting outfield will be LF- Burris, CF- Davis, RF- Zupcic. Probably the fastest outfield to ever take the field for the Black and Gold.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?
