ASU @ UMKC

Unread post by asumike83 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 2:03 pm

Tip-off at 2:05 PM from the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City. UMKC enters the game 4-5 overall after losing 99-47 to #6 Louisville in their last game.

First game in 8 days for both squads as there will likely be some rust. Need to shake off the cobwebs and use our size advantage to control the boards. Time to go ahead and get that first DI victory!

Got the live stream going, pretty decent quality through the UMKC site but it does cost $5.95. Free audio through GoASU.

Tevin Baskin with 8 quick points off the bench.

Mike Neal has also returned to action, great to see him out there. Neal to Trice for a 3, 18-11 Apps. Timeout UMKC.

5 straight by Tab Hamilton, 26-17 Apps. 8:00 in the 1st.

One thing we have to get better at as we get into conference play (insert Brian Okam joke here) is free throws. 4-8 from the line so far, hope it does not hurt us later.

Glad to see Neal back and hope the Apps break the losing string against D1. Don't know how you could tell about rust as the team has looked pretty rusty all season so far.

That said, GO APPS!

33-32 Apps at the half. We are 5-10 from the line, UMKC is 6-6.

For anyone who is a premium GoASU subscriber, you can log into the media player and watch the UMKC stream.

In unrelated news, Brian Quick scored his 2nd TD of the season today.

59-54, about 8:00 to go. The 3's are starting to fall. Trice is having his most efficient scoring game of the year.

We do look better in the halfcourt sets with Neal back and Trice is benefiting from being able to play exclusively off the ball. Let's hope that translates into better execution late in the game.

75-63 Apps, just under 2:00. Should be able to put this one in the win column.

81-71 Apps, it is a final.

Glad to see us get back in the win column and finally get a DI win after letting a couple get away.

Mike Neal did not do a lot in terms of scoring (4 points) but his presence made a big difference. He was on the court for 31 minutes, had 4 assists to 2 turnovers and controlled the offense very well. His defense was excellent as well with 2 steals, 1 block and several other forced turnovers that did not show up in the stat sheet.

Jamaal Trice had 16 points on just 9 attempts and looked much more comfortable without having to be the primary ball handler. Baskin led the team with 18 points, Hamilton had 17 and Canty added 12.

Overall, an encouraging performance. Tough one coming up Wednesday at South Carolina but with very winnable home games against Presbyterian and Milligan following that, it would be great to get some momentum before we get into the heart of the SoCon schedule.

The stat I've been looking for all year is assists. That means we're running good sets, getting open shots, getting GOOD shots, and moving without the ball. Against western we had about six, I believe. Today we had 15 with only 11 turnovers!

Another great sign is that after starting 6-13 from the free throw line, we made our last 17 attempts.

Nice for the guys to finally win one. Maybe this will give them some confidence with the bulkof the SoCon schedule coming up soon.

Don't put too much stock into RPI this early in the season but it is disturbing. Citadel is dead last at 347, Fyrman 346, ASU 336, Samford 328. UMKC has a losing record (4-6) but because have played pretty good competition was at 142 before todays game.

Looks like it just updated after UNCG went final. The SoCon now has 3 of the bottom 4 teams in the DI RPI rankings with UNCG (344), Furman (346) and The Citadel (347). Ouch.

Good win heading into the SCar game.

The gamecocks suck. Already lost to Elon at home and have zero impressive wins. Best win is beating Arkansas Little Rock on a neutral court.

Students will be on break and the game starts at 5pm on a Wednesday. The atmosphere will not be the least bit hostile.

Will we win? Probably not. But the stage is set to go into a BCS arena and play a competitive game that gives us more confidence. Then come home and take care of Milligan and Presbyterian and somehow have a little momentum going into conference play.

I'm still not very optimistic about the season in general, but Wednesday's game is big for the future of this team in my opinion.

Looks like Neal made a real difference. Glad to finally see an app win. Maybe things will come together once we get to conference play. Go apps!
