Re: New Hire
Since Bobby Lutz's name keeps rolling around, thought this might stir some interest. It's old news by six months or so, but...
Former Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz, for a week, back in the game. Could it become more?

Re: New Hire
Say what you want about Capel but he had a higher winning percentage than Fox. They guy was basically set up to fail from the beginning by an AD who seemingly had no clue in regards to basketball.

Re: New Hire
That is true but one thing that rarely gets mentioned is that the APR was already turning around in Capel's last year or two. It just wasn't reflected in our scores while he was here because of the lag in the NCAA releasing those numbers.firemoose wrote: ↑Thu Feb 14, 2019 11:12 pmHe also drove us into academic probation and a post season ban. Not sure his winning percentage matters a whole hell of a lot in that case. We all know what Cobb was and did but he didn't recruit the players that nose dived our APR. Capel's teams could have had a winning percentage of 1000% but with us on probation would it have mattered?Arsenal App wrote: ↑Thu Feb 14, 2019 10:12 pmSay what you want about Capel but he had a higher winning percentage than Fox. Add in the fact that Fox turned around the APR in part by overloading the roster with walk-ons and the whole narrative isn't quite as simple as it's usually described IMO.

Re: New Hire
Never said it was simple. And I wasn't defending Fox. Have said several times it is time for a change. Just said that winning percentage didn't matter a whole lot when we were on probation. Even with it turning around it still happened while Capel was coach. And he could have easily done the same with walk ons to get the APR up before we went there. If one coach gets the blame for all the bad that happens under them then it applies to all. Fox doesn't get 100% credit for getting us out, since things were climbing. But Capel doesn't get a pass just because Cobb was an idiot. Has to shoulder some of the blame.
Don't worry. No more posts from me on open board anymore. We'll see about the Lodge but it really seems there is no need anymore. The new ones have you covered for info. Sure they can do a better job and no one has to read the novel posts anymore.

Re: New Hire
Capel inherited a team with Sims, Williamson, Butts and a few other players from a 24-win squad.
Fox inherited a lot less.
Capel having a better record than Fox is false equivalency.
And the APR turnaround started under Capel. Yes, he got the program into the mess with horrible scores in his first two years, but the scores were going up in his last two years, so Fox shouldn't get 100 percent credit.

Re: New Hire
Doesn’t seem like Lutz is desperate for a job according to this article.
He will only accept a job under his terms working for who he wants to.

Re: New Hire
I never gave Capel a pass but there are those on here who want to blame him for everything that's gone wrong not only in his regime but in Fox's regime too. Yes, Capel ran the program into a ditch but Fox hasn't been able to pull us out of that ditch. As for Prince Charlie Cobb, well, he hired them both. Enough said.firemoose wrote: ↑Fri Feb 15, 2019 12:14 amNever said it was simple. And I wasn't defending Fox. Have said several times it is time for a change. Re: New Hire
I actually don't blame Capel although his performance was the cause of our demise. Cobb was the responsible party since he hired an absolutely inexperienced coach to do a job he was completely unqualified to do. I think Capel knows basketball, but he was clueless regarding the administrative part of the job. Would would anybody expect given he had ONE year as an assistant and not even a high assistant. I got behind him and hoped it would work. For a brief time I thought lightning might strike, but then reality.
The root cause of problems we continue to suffer from is the hiring decision, not the coach himself.

Re: New Hire
I think we can all agree that Capel and Fox had poor on the court results and it doesn't really matter which one is better than the other.
