Where did the name 49ers even come from? Did I miss a gold rush in Charlotte or something?
I know you’re trying to be a smartass, but there was a gold rush in NC, well before the bigger one out west, and it was in Charlotte.
Give 'em hell!

From their wiki: The nickname of the athletic team is the 49ers, indicative of the fact that UNC Charlotte (then Charlotte College) was saved from permanent closure in 1949. The mascot is "Norm the Niner," a gold miner.

From Wikipedia:
The nickname "49ers" derives from the fact that the university's predecessor—Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC – established in 1946) was saved from being shut down by the state in 1949 by Bonnie Cone, when the Charlotte Center became Charlotte College. Due to this "49er spirit" that Cone felt embodied the university, referring to the settlers that endured much hardships in traveling across the United States to seek fortune in the California Gold Rush, students of the fledgling UNC Charlotte chose "49ers" as the school's mascot. The fact that the University's Main Campus front entrance is located on North Carolina Highway 49 is pure coincidence.

Prior to the "49ers" moniker, the athletic teams were known as the "Owls" due to CCUNC's beginnings as a night school.

I think the school started in 1949. Though with the miner motif it speaks to 1849 when the gold rush ended and money to California. They are celebrating a negative event in a way. But 49er has multiple meanings.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

Congrats on the win. Like I said I wasn’t going to be surprised at a loss. We have taken better teams to App and left with an L. The first 10-12 minutes was some of the worst Niner basketball I’ve ever witnessed in person. We missed some open shots and had some unforced TOs, but y’all played solid D that contributed to our lack of execution all game long. You also hit some big shots. Congrats again!

Good luck the rest of the way. Seems like you guys have a good system in place with your coach. You guys will be a tough out for a lot of teams.

Guys at least he's gracious in defeat. Most 49er fans after a loss are so apathetic and pretend it doesn't matter.

I believe they get that from watching UNC-CH fans.

That game got too close for me at the end, the 49er's didn't have any quit and almost made a game out of it. That was a great showing and they should be proud of how hard they played. We'll be pulling for you the rest of the way, good luck in Conference USA!

NWA did tweet a crowd photo 10 minutes before tipoff...

Then no photos of the crowd at game time or updates of the score. Following the pattern of being a clown on twitter like the BGP GA St guest last week.

Twitter really brings out the worst in people.

I didn't say I'd be pulling for them to win.

This is epic my UNCC co-workers have been pointing at this game for months. They have been terrorizing the ASU people where I at work for weeks, funny today they called in sick. The students chanting "Just like football" was funny. Run along back to your commuter school.

What they are feeling today will be how it will feel the first time we lose to them in football.

You know what? App is diverse...we beat UNCC in football and basketball. If that's not diversity, I don't know what is.
