Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)

Kevin got fired after that season if memory serves. Tom had success fairly early but the last years were painful. Good guys though.

Things went South for Apke the last two years. He also had the misfortune of being at App during ETSU’s hey day.

In my time in watching App state basketball, I would put it as this...

Cremins
Kerns
Buzz 1st time
Fancher
Buzz 2nd time (just in terms of coaching that team -- not what he did to the program after)
Cantwell/Apke (both the same in my book)
Capel/Fox (same as above)

Apke had a 20 and a 19 win season. Cantwell had one winning season. I would put Apke above Cantwell.

That's fair. I was young during those years. I just remember my dad and grandfather being unhappy about both!

I think a lot of folks were unhappy at the end of his tenure as his last 2 seasons failed to reach 10 wins in either.

According to Kara Richey, a media person that covers Arkansas St, 8 of the 20 SBC All Conference members are in the portal. Of the overall 20, 7 are out of eligibility, 8 are in the portal.

I vividly remember granddaddy yelling about "I will tell you one thing Kevin Cant do well and that is COACHING BASKETBALL!" He wanted Linda Robinson to coach the men's and women's team -- and he grew up in an era where that was not only not allowed, women weren't even allowed to have a team where he grew up! He simply did not like that coach.. God rest that old ornery man's soul!

I was deployed at the beginning of Apke's tenure and a student during the end so I only saw the bad years unfortunately so I just automatically put him in the same category, but very clearly Apke had some good years and should be ahead of Cantwell! Appreciate it!

I guess technically Fox should be ahead of Capel; just because he had to get us out of the APR hell Capel put us in.

Kevin did not get fired. He left for a $60,000 dollar pay raise at Ga. Tech. Apke had a couple of good seasons. We lost to Kansas in overtime the year they won the National Championship.

Someone mentioned Kerns made a bunch of JuCo offers a few weeks ago, not sure if those are considered transfers though.

I would think there is a chance Spillers does at Wake Forest. If he does not start he would play a lot as 6th man I am sure. Abson doesn't score enough to start but he would play a lot due to defense.

We have one player from Charlotte who is suppose to be coming for a visit.

That is absolutely wild that someone (ACC school) would pay $100k+ for a 35% 3 point shooter from the Sun Belt.

If CJ Huntley changes his mind and sticks around one more season, we’d have a nice core to build around. Would love to have either Harcum or Marsh back. Wonder if Harcum did transfer if Marsh would be incentivized to return getting a starting role at PG. Tate’s comments about Luke Wilson are promising as well.
