CJ Huntley

Unread post by AppStFan1 » Thu Jun 05, 2025 2:15 pm

So far he has had 8 private workouts with NBA teams over the last few weeks. He has worked out for Hornets, Pelicans, Bulls, Clippers, Warriors, Suns, Lakers, and Cavs. Does he have a shot to get drafted late? I would think he has strong odds to get signed as a UDFA but wondering if he could slide into round 2. Here are the picks of those teams who he has worked out for.

> Second Round
33. Charlotte
34. Charlotte (from New Orleans via San Antonio, Phoenix, and Memphis)
41. Golden State (from Miami via Brooklyn and Indiana)
45. Chicago (from Sacramento)
49. Cleveland (from Milwaukee)
51. LA Clippers (from Minnesota via Atlanta and Houston)
52. Phoenix (from Denver via Charlotte and Minnesota)
55. Los Angeles Lakers
58. Cleveland

Would love for him to sneak into the second round but that is unlikely.

It would be big for us but I am with you. I am fully expecting him to get signed by a NBA team after the draft or straight to G-League. I don't normally watch the NBA Draft but will tune in for the second round just to see if he is picked or his name is mentioned at all.

Update on Huntley since some things have changed and the draft starts tonight.

He started the draft process with a real good showing at the PIT pre-combine tournament and then had 11 confirmed private workouts with NBA teams over the last few weeks. He has worked out for Chicago Bulls, LA Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, La Lakers, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, and Toronto Raptors.

Here are the picks of those teams who he has worked out for.

Second Round
33 Charlotte Hornets
34 Charlotte Hornets
39 Toronto Raptors
41 Golden State Warriors
42 Sacramento Kings
45 Chicago Bulls
49 Cleveland Cavaliers
51 Los Angeles Clippers
52 Phoenix Suns
55 Los Angeles Lakers
58 Cleveland Cavaliers

It will be interesting to see if he is signed by one of these teams or someone who did not have him in for a workout.

I don’t follow the NBA. Who has needs that fit his skill set?

5th senior 2nd rounders are g-league, two-way contract players for depth. He’s likely seen as a stretch 4 with below average defense at the next level.

Amazing person and would love for him to land anywhere.

Same here. Hopefully he has a contract offer from a NBA or G-League team by the end of tonight. Good luck to CJ!

The hornets become an interesting location after they traded away Mark Williams last night.

Only if the Hornets are looking to play "five out".

Not really much correlation between Mark Williams and Huntley's games.

A team will likely sign him if they need to round out their g-league team with a stretch 4.

I will be pleasantly surprised if he is drafted but I fully expect someone to sign him for training camp and send him to their G-League team like you said. I wish him all the luck in the world and will be pulling hard for him tonight!

Something I didn’t know until yesterday is NBA teams can sign only two players to two-way contracts, increasing CJ’s chances of playing in the NBA. (He can play in a maximum of 50 NBA games next season.) The Suns had two late second-round draft picks and made it known they planned to take CJ with one of them. However, they traded away both picks at the last minute. Something else I didn’t know, CJ was one of only three college players last season with at least 40 dunks and 40 3-pointers.

I don't normally look into the NBA Draft and rookie rules but with how it was going for CJ I did some digging and from what I read NBA teams can actually have three players on a two-way contract. I also read that they can be active for up to 50 games on the NBA roster and spend the rest of the time in the G-League. Another interesting tidbit is that players with three years or less service are eligible for the two-way contract but they can't have more than two years on that contract. Something to keep an eye on is that a NBA team can convert the deal to a NBA contract at any time. It will be interesting to see what they do with him.

I know the Suns are a team that CJ told people he thought could draft him. I wondered if they had talked to his agent and felt good they could sign him after the draft and that affected their decision with the trade? If they had a definite draftable grade on CJ and were still able to get him and do that trade then I would think they are ecstatic with how their draft went.
