What's next for The Moose, AppGrad78 and 24/7?
Re: What's next for The Moose, AppGrad78 and 24/7?
You people are delusional if you think Seth Greenberg would come here.
Lutz, however would be a home run hire compared to what we have.
The OP alluded to Charlie Cobb doing more than "going down the hall" to make this hire. This is imperative. However, no evidence exists to say that Cobb will go that route.

Yeah, no evidence besides Darcie, Billy Jones, Pendleton (RIP), and Wesley.

You're changing the subject. Your point was about how Cobb will only walk down the hall to find a new coach. I gave you examples of times (the majority of his hires) where he didn't do that.

This isn't the first time Matt has been singled out. In a 2008 poll of 450 D-I assistants by FoxSports.com Matt was voted as one of the Top Ten mid-major assistants in the country. In 2009 he was ranked 12th on the list by CollegeInsider.com.wataugan03 wrote:I wouldn't take too much stock in these lists. I think the main qualification is being friends with whoever writes the article - and that's not to say McMahon isn't a good coach. But, I would note that he spent the vast majority of his career learning under a career .506 coach we fired. His second mentor is a career .541 coach we hate. Then again, I suspect he has learned a lot these 3 years at Murray State. I think it makes him a much more attractive candidate than he was 4 years ago. I can't imagine he would turn down an offer from us or pretty much any other D1 school who wants to make him a head coach. Mid-major assistant coaches just don't turn down HC jobs very often.Kgfish wrote:Bacari Alexander – Michigan, TJ Cleveland – Arkansas, Mike Dunlap – St. Johns, Andre LeFleur – Providence, Bobby Lutz – North Carolina State, Jack Murphy – Memphis, Matt McMahon – Murray State, Josh Postorino – Georgia Tech, Heath Schroyer – UNLV.
That's some mighty impressive company McMahon is lumped in with and more than likely the only one ib that list App can afford. Hope Cobb can get past his ego and reach out to Matt.
Matt McMahon – Murray State
The only coach from a true “Mid-Major” program on the list, Matt McMahon has proven his ability to stand with the best assistants in college basketball. Coming by way of UNC- Wilmington and Appalachian State, Matt was scooped up by new head coach Steve Prohm for his keen recruiting abilities and high basketball IQ. Along with helping Murray to a top 10 ranking in the polls this year, McMahon was the primary reason behind the signing of highly touted recruits Erik McCree and C.J. Ford.

Get Matt Ridge from Davidson County Community College. Don't knock him to you pull up what he has done for the "Storm" with the slim pickings that he has to work with. Has sent a few good players on to bigger and better things. We would have a very entertaining team that would move up and down the court quickly with him running the show.

Lutz has a pretty good track record, but I don't entirely understand why people are so enamored with him either. UNCC went downhill his last 5 years there, and State has done the same since Gottfried's first year.
If we're going to hire an assistant, shouldn't it be someone from a winning program?
My Tech friends did not like Greenberg. They were glad to see him go. Though, at this point they may wish he were still there. I'm not sure he was a good fit within the athletic department at Tech. I seriously doubt that he would be interested in App. We are in a situation that will take several years for us to right the ship especially with the possibility of a postseason ban. I doubt an established coach is interested in dealing with such. I think we are best able to attract someone who sees it as opportunity to build a name for himself by resurrecting a down program.

Agreed - a very close friend within the ACC when he was coaching said that the media loved him and he played to them but wasn't liked by many others, including opposing coaches - which brings me to today's quiz ---hapapp wrote:EastHallApp wrote:Greenberg has one NCAA trip in his last 16 years as a head coach.

Only twice in modern history has a coach been named ACC Coach of the Year by the media and failed to get his team into the NCAA playoffs --- ???

He is batting .750 in my opinion. The Satterfield hire was the correct one and I will give him .250 for correcting the Capel hire if he does not extend the contract.IGgreer wrote:He's 2 out of his last 2 hiring from down the hall in the major revenue sports.T-Dog wrote:You're changing the subject. Re: What's next for The Moose, AppGrad78 and 24/7?
Alvin Gentry's not coming back east any time soon. If this were ten years ago when his parents were still living and he was between jobs, it would have made a lot more sense. It's not like Alvin's unfamiliar with college basketball's highs and lows. He was recruited by Bob Light and Press Maravich. He signed and played for Coach Maravich two years and Bobby C. for two years. He has also coached at Colorado, Baylor and Kansas.HeffnerIV wrote:I don't really want an NBA coach. Mine was more of comment based on publicity. I don't think he'd make a good college coach.appdaze wrote:HeffnerIV wrote:Alvin Gentry would be a neat hire, but I'm sure we couldn't afford him and we probably need a guy with recruiting contacts and someone with knowledge of the academic side of coaching considering our predicament. Just having a guy who has 'NBA Head Coach' on his resume' would open a lot of doors and bring a lot of free publicity.
If you want an NBA coach (obviously a looooooooooong shot) then go for Nate McMillan. Raleigh Roots and a good coach.
Now he's assoc. head coach of the LA Clippers; he's making (and has made) boatloads of money. It's known that he's invested well and that he has few worries. He has homes in Santa Monica and in Scottsdale. His wife is a San Antonio gal turned Valley girl. The adjustment from NBA back to college wouldn't be nearly as great as the adjustment from LA nightlife to Boone/Blowing Rock nightlife.
Alvin has distinguished himself as an ASU graduate. He's been enormously successful. The Gentrys have three children who were all born and raised in the west. With Alvin's parents being deceased, there's almost nothing to attract The Gentrys back east. HC of the Bobcats (or whoever they are this month) might move him some day.
It just wasn't meant to be for ASU.

I worry that with a three-year contract extension, Charlie will give this another "football is king--basketball is for naught" bargain-basement search, knowing he can walk away a full year before the new coach's contract runs out.
In the best of all worlds, the name of our new Chancellor would be made known within the next ten days and Ken Peacock would advise Charlie to confer with the Chancellor-in-waiting before he started making phone calls to serious candidates and scheduling campus visits. In short, I believe TPTB need to inject a good bit of "healthy anxiety" into Charlie's ear--sooner rather than later.
I've been on both ends of those "healthy anxiety" messages; and they do work wonders.

I have always admired your knowledge of everything Appalachian. I have a friend in Harrogate , TN who claims that the coach at Lincoln Memorial would be a good one for a rebuild. Do you know anything about Josh Schertz ?
In his five seasons with the Railsplitters, Schertz has posted a 112-38 (74.7 winning percentage) record, won two South Atlantic Conference regular season titles and one league tournament championship. He has led LMU to four-consecutive 20-win seasons, three-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, nine postseason wins, and enters the 2013-14 season with a current South Atlantic record of 42-consecutive weeks ranked in the NABC Division II national rankings. The 20-win seasons, SAC regular season and tournament championships, as well as the postseason wins, NCAA Tournament appearances and national rankings are all first time occurrences for Lincoln Memorial basketball. In the five seasons prior to his arrival, Lincoln Memorial had won just 39 games overall, and had posted seven winning seasons all-time at the Division II level.

He has had an assistant coaching presence in North Carolina at both Queens and High Point. In fact, he was involved in the recruitment of a Winston-Salem kid (Danny Gathings) who initially signed with VaTech and transferred to High Point after one season in Blacksburg. Buzzzzzz and Houston Fancher were after Gathings--but lost him--twice. Once to VaTech recruiters in the Rickey Stokes era and once to Schertz while an ass't coach at HPU.

I don't post on here hardly ever, but a few thoughts. I was a manager during some of the Fancher years and have a fond memory of my time spent around ASU basketball. I am now a high school coach that stays in touch with lots of the former players and staff from my college years.
While I think Fancher was a solid coach, I have not seen anybody push, inspire, and make players better fundamentally than Matt McMahon and Tony Pujol did on a daily basis (McMahon mostly guards/Pujol bigs). Matt was ready to be a head coach then, he is more than ready now.. He had opportunities to go bigger/better places long before the 25 win 2007 season, most notably to Marquette when Crean was still there--as a top assistant. He bleeds black anmd gold--always has. He has always had a vested interest in making App a powerful mid major program that attracts excitement and big crowds. He is an accomplished recruiter. He is as good a basketball mind and as hard working a coach as I've seen.
I should be a nobody to a mid major assistant coach, but I can't tell you how many times I've asked him for guidance on any number of things--at ANY point in the year or the day--and gotten a phone call or email within minutes to talk with me.
I know I speak for lots of App basketball alumni when I say that all of us--the extended family of App basketball--will exhale and breath a sigh of relief if he were to get the job. I for one will be at every game possible and support his program because I know for a fact that it will be run with class and it will be successful on and off the floor. All of this being said, I haven't ever flat out asked if he would take this job were it available--it isn't my place to do so. Personally, I feel like he would jump on the chance to be back home...but that is simply an opinion.

It hits me high and low as a basketball junkie and as a retired "systems" HR geek. Charlie Cobb has to dig deep within himself get beyond his ego and his biases and closely examine the skill-sets required to build a fundamentally sound and competitive (in academics and in athleticism) mid-major basketball program while making it interesting enough to draw paying fans back into HCC. Coaches like that can't be found under a rock in Kraut Creek. They do exist, but they get paid commensurate with their skills and previous successes.
