I have a few thoughts about that. I've never worked for CC but I know plenty that have and while Capel absolutely owns the majority of the blame, I don't buy for a second the program's decline rests solely on him.Gonzo wrote:Just a brother covering for an incompetent sibling. Anyone who doesn't attribute our basketball program's sharp decline to Jason Capel hasn't been paying attention. You know it, I know it, David Glenn knows it.
After these last four miserable years, revisiting CC's decision to hire Capel who had only 10 months experience as a bottom rung assistant is borderline depressing and definitely disheartening. I mean, what kind of amateur, irresponsible, parks and rec hire is that? I can say it's irresponsible now because of the results. Plain and simple. Not just the W-L record, but the academic issues, behavior etc. Also, the App State basketball coach job in 2010 was 100x more attractive than it is today.
Again, I am NOT running to Capel's defense saying that he is getting a bad break. He took the job therefore he can take responsibility for the outcome. I just think it's extremely important to be objective about major decisions that affect our athletic programs. If we convince ourselves that when a coach fails it's 100% "them" not "us", we put ourselves at risk for complacency and becoming blind to the real problems that exist. If that does happen, one day WE (App State) will be the majority of the problem causing our failures but no one will see it. We'll be too busy blaming that coach that didn't pan out the way we wanted.
Wow - that was more than I intended to write.

It will be very interesting to see what happens with the new Chancellor regarding leadership in the athletic department. I think most University Chancellors/Presidents would've shown CC the door by now. But seeing as how I've never been in charge of a 17,500 student University, my knowledge is limited on the subject.

One thing is for sure... we won't have to wait too much longer for answers to the questions being asked on this forum.
