The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to discuss
Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
if we go by the pros/cons listed here, Mcnahon would seem to have the most upside, cant see Young coming to App, his family has it too good at Wofford, they love him, his wife has a great career, it probably would take alot more money than we can afford to bring him to Boone. The rest...eh; the Virginia Assistant worries me because he seems more comfortable as an assistant than hc, and I not sure he could handle the monumental job ahead of him, and the VMI coach, nice record, doesn't look like any kind of world beater. CC put your pride aside, bring our lost son home!!!

Are there not Conflicting reports as to whether MM would take the job? Maybe this is proof that he would not.moehler wrote:if we go by the pros/cons listed here, Mcnahon would seem to have the most upside, cant see Young coming to App, his family has it too good at Wofford, they love him, his wife has a great career, it probably would take alot more money than we can afford to bring him to Boone. Just something to keep in mind about Duggar Baucom and VMI:
The last coach to be successful at VMI was Bill Blair. He went 48-60 from 1972 to 1976. The best coach in school history had a loosing record. His time at VMI propelled his career and eventually became a head coach in the NBA.
The Citadel faces a lot of the challenges that VMI faces. The last coach to to have a winning record at the Citadel was Norm Sloan who went a respectable but not over-the-top 57 and 38 from 1954 to 1960. Because of the incredible job he did at the Citadel he was brought in Florida and later NC State where he won the school's first National Championship.
You have to go back before the World War II to find a coach that was successful at either of these 2 schools. (some consider L.F. Miller successful at VMI in the 60s even though he went 41 and 83)
Duggar Baucom might be a .500 coach in 9 seasons but in very few comparables coaches have left small military schools with some success but not knock-your-socks-off records and had very good careers. Military schools face such obstacles in recruiting, training, practicing, and funding that if a coach has some success they have defied the odds and typically do well once those hand-cuffs come off (nice pun right Coach Baucom was a cop).
Also when looking at his record. His first season he went 7-20. He was out most of that season because of medical problems. If you take that season out of his record his win-loss record is much better.

That's disappointing. Either Cobb is more interested in lesser candidates or LeVelle just isn't feeling Boone.firemoose wrote:I'm not commenting on the search but I saw this and thought some might be interested.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
I believe he switched to the run and gun style (characterized by constant substitutions, lots of pressing, tons of 3's and quick shots) a few years into his tenure at VMI . . . might have been in response to losing a couple key players to injuries.spong wrote: Also when looking at his record. I'm not sure if that's a style he is committed to or if he feels he needs something a little more unpredictable and exciting to get recruits at VMI and catch more talented teams off balance. Either way, I commend him for trying something different.
Anyways, when you have a coach who stayed in one spot, I think it makes the most sense to throw out a coaches first 2-3 years. It takes time to recruit and develop your own players. Your results in the first few years are heavily dependent on what happened before you took over. You're soley responsible for the later years (though luck certainly plays a large role).

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Another tidbit on Baucom at VMI is that one of his lead assistants is Daniel Willis, of Hickory birth. Daniel played at Hickory High, quarterbacking the famed 96' undefeated state championship team and serving as one of the stars of a deep hoops team. He went on to play at LR and joined Duggar at Tusculum before making the movie to Lexington. I'm pretty sure Daniel retains extensive Hickory ties and would love to be back closer to home and family, should Baucom get the offer, accept, and invite Daniel to join him in Boone...which I assume he would.spong wrote:Just something to keep in mind about Duggar Baucom and VMI:

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
I don't claim to know all of the inner workings on this coaching search and negotiations, but I do know we have zoooomed in on various prospects in the past but failed to be able to offer enough money to close the deal on top prospects. That has to change in order to come even close to getting some of the ones who have been mentioned in this thread and similar threads on this topic.

I have doubted after watching his team play in the 2014 NCAAT...whether or not we would want him. I did not see the adjustments, or strategy to really try to be competitive in the game they played.....and I watched hoping we had a diamond in the rough in our back yard.EastHallApp wrote:I have doubted from the start whether he would be interested in the App job.IGgreer wrote:That's disappointing. From a game day coaching situation, he seemed to be more of what we had.
I know nothing of player improvement etc.!

Made no adjustments? His team was down 6 points going into halftime vs. one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the country. A team that happened to get white hot from distance.asutrnr81 wrote:I have doubted after watching his team play in the 2014 NCAAT...whether or not we would want him. How about going 15-1 in the MEAC, beating NC State in Raleigh, beating us, and going on a 20-game winning streak? They were 28-5 out of the friggin' MEAC!!
Do you really expect him to compete, athletically, with the size, speed, and depth of Iowa State? Players like Georges Niang and DeAndre Kane don't grow on trees and having his team in the conversation (a 14 seed) is MORE than enough to show he can play with the big boys.
Guys like that catch heat but they're not playing heads up with their budgets, recruiting restrictions, etc.

Could be a cultural thing. Coming from an HBC in Durham to Boone maybe not fit his personal lifestyle.firemoose wrote:I'm not commenting on the search but I saw this and thought some might be interested.

I just said what I saw....and I did not say "no" adjustments....I watched the entire game but it was only one game. Heck I have no idea....but his kids did not seem to be connected to his instructions "adjustments" much like our kids were not under Capel. Heck he made the big dance....they were better than we were....but making the dance out of the MEAC any more than out of the Southern is not exactly startling.whosgotthearrow? wrote:Made no adjustments? Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Jamal Brunt's name keeps coming up. He is the associate head coach at UR. He was Mike Rhoades first recruit when Rhoades got the R-MC job. He was a four year starter at point guard for the Yellow Jackets. They then coached against each other on opposite ends of the city with Rhoades at VCU and Brunt at UR. He has been at UR since 2007. He is a 2003 graduate of Randolph-Macon.
Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
I've heard Jamal Brunt's name mentioned several times.
The issue I have with him is that he is very young and we would once again have one of the youngest coaches in the country. He also has only been at schools that were pretty successful so I'm not sure he really knows how to build a program for scratch like he would need to do in Boone. I also am not sure he is the right guy to fix our APR issues.
The big problem I have with him is that he is in no way more qualified for the job than Matt McMahon. On the upside he has handled scheduling for Richmond the last few years and has done a great job.
I think he will be a great head coach one day but I hope that Appalachian passes on him. With that said I have heard rumors that he is the leading candidate right now.

How many practices/games have you seen him coach?
I have watched once on TV. That does not mean he can or can't....but I stand behind my observation of that game.
