Re: Yikes. It's Capel on TV
Buzz announced Capel and Kachmarik as his assistants at his UNCW presser, sure that App would hire McMahon. That was on a Friday. The news of Capel leaked Monday afternoon, 72 hours later.
Fancher gets slack, but when he took over, everything crumbled because Houston instilled discipline and the program suffered due to the 5 & 8 rule (precursor to APR). Not the greatest coach, but he did admirable considering how little support he got from the administration.

Re: Yikes. It's Capel on TV
Initially, I supported bringing BP back until he turned Cobb down twice. When Cobb went into begging mode, I jumped off the wagon. I knew the Petersons well enough to know that if Buzzy said no twice that there were three potential issues--salary; Jan's issues with returning to life in Boone from the family's Pineville/SW Charlotte mansion; and Nicole and Olivia having to leave their college/high school friends. Turned out to be all three! It didn't take long figure out the deal. Buzz needed a job w/steady income. He had (count 'em) three huge home mortgages to pay off. So he finally caved and signed a contract w/App. As soon as the ink was dry, it came out that Jan, Olivia and Rob would remain in Charlotte until the school year was over. Then, it leaked out that Buzz would not be looking to buy a home in Boone. Instead, he would rent a small apt. In fact, Buzz continued to reside with his family in Charlotte and commuted to campus several times each week. Shortly after the season was over, Buzz pursued the UNC-W job and demanded a $600,000 salary. He settled for an initial salary of $400,000 or so with incremental increases each year. The UNC-W athletic program was flat broke--paying off buy-outs owed to the previous two men's BB coaches. The Chancellor had to borrow $$$,$$$ from "inside sources" to pay Peterson's first two years. The final straw on Buzz's real character as a person (if there was any remaining question in anyone's mind) dropped when he resigned as ASU's head coach by leaving a voice-mail message in Charlie Cobb's VM box on a Sunday morning. He didn't have the guts to speak with Cobb face-to-face. Appsolutely true story! He then cleaned out his office in HCC and drove straight to Wilmington where Jan was already waiting for him. Good riddance. "Quoth the raven, ..."EastHallApp wrote:There are some who agree with you, but I don't. Fancher had some nice years, but in nine years he never even played for the SoCon title and only once had back-to-back winning seasons (and that was followed by a 13-18 year). Total record of 137-136. I know App's a football school, but if you care about basketball, that's not good enough.CVAPP wrote:I don't keep up with hoops but it seems to me firing Fancher was the first of several mistakes for the men's program.
I'm in the minority here, but I don't even think bringing Buzz back was a mistake. He instantly improved the program, even in his brief second stint.
The mistake was hiring Capel to replace him.
Proud triple-degree App grad--Classes of '66, '70 and '81.

I was in a small group project with Matt in one of my business management classes and he was smarter than everyone in the group, perhaps the whole class. Think about that...he was a star athlete who excelled in real classes. And then think about who we hired instead.

I have managed people for many many years. It is VERY rarely a good idea to bring someone back at the same level they left. It just does not work out the majority of the time. Now in some cases someone leaves ( on good terms ) gains experience and you bring them back at a higher level can work out. A great example would be Scott who left as an assistant and came back to be head coach. A great example of bringing someone back to the same job would be that other guy who was living off of MJ till MJ had enough.

Isn't he back with the Hornets? Director of Basketball Affairs...seems like an immoral position directing affairs and all.bcoach wrote:I have managed people for many many years.
