Re: App @ Ark LR
Something that I haven't paid much attention to that I've noticed lately...we have zero vocal leadership from the players. Good teams don't need the coaches to constantly motivate them because they have players who gather the troops when necessary to keep each others' heads in the game. Our youth is a part of the issue, but we need some players to step up as leaders. Honestly, it appears that our best players are some of the most silent. Who are the captains, anyway?

We're playing D1 basketball with a roster that's half made up of D2 talent. I'll be there Saturday and Monday but will be surprised if we make a game of either. Peace.

Tonight was a good chance for us and we let it slip away late in the first half and early on in the second half. This team competes well for 30 minutes but the other 10 can be challenging.

Still waiting to see that improvement that was foretold to come as the season progressed, still nothing. By the way, what's the losing streak at currently?

What amazes me more than anything is that some expect Jim Fox and his predecessor to have turned this program around in the same amount of time when its painfully obvious that the predecessor drove this program off a cliff.
Tonight we played pretty terrible for large stretches of the game and still only lost by seven. Not here to make excuses, just state the facts.

Unlike Capel, Fox was a great hire. Because he was a great hire, the expectations are higher than what they were with Capel.bigCasu wrote:What amazes me more than anything is that some expect Jim Fox and his predecessor to have turned this program around in the same amount of time when its painfully obvious that the predecessor drove this program off a cliff.

No C that is an incorrect statement. The expectation is to show some improvement on the court. That has not yet happened. Maybe off the court it has, but the product on the court is no where near a D1 program. Worse, it is the same issues-turnovers, defense and lack or scoring. I will be happy if just one of those things is no longer a problem at the end of the year. Imo that would be some improvement.bigCasu wrote:What amazes me more than anything is that some expect Jim Fox and his predecessor to have turned this program around in the same amount of time when its painfully obvious that the predecessor drove this program off a cliff.

Usually agree with you C but disagree on this aspect.bigCasu wrote:What amazes me more than anything is that some expect Jim Fox and his predecessor to have turned this program around in the same amount of time when its painfully obvious that the predecessor drove this program off a cliff.

He is in year 3 and the players he has brought in the last few classes cannot consistently play 40 minutes. I have yet to see us play 40 full minutes in consecutive games which is a major problem. We are poor defensively and outside of Ronshad have 0 consistent offense.
Capel was a stop gap hire. Fox was a home run hire.

7 game losing streak and lost 10 of the last 11 games. 4 wins vs D1 competition.WataugaMan wrote:Still waiting to see that improvement that was foretold to come as the season progressed, still nothing. By the way, what's the losing streak at currently?

Re: App @ Ark LR
I don't believe we can quantify a "great hire" until the tenure is complete, whenever that is. Right now, Fox is rounding second base. Nobody is sure if he'll make it to home plate (finish current contract), or whether he'll get another at bat (new contract)Goapps15 wrote:Usually agree with you C but disagree on this aspect.bigCasu wrote:What amazes me more than anything is that some expect Jim Fox and his predecessor to have turned this program around in the same amount of time when its painfully obvious that the predecessor drove this program off a cliff.

None of the things you mentioned will improve by the end of this season (pretty much a month from now) because the same players will be on the floor. I believe that this group has maxed out it's potential for this season (and most of them are back next year). Not a knock on our coaching staff.

Re: App @ Ark LR
With the exception of O'Boyle, who is a non-factor, this will be the same group that takes the court next year. No clue how Seacat will settle in and Hough, a D2 transfer, is a mystery.
In my opinion, Fox has gotten off to the wrong foot in recruiting. He's brought in so many projects because that's what worked at Davidson and most of them can't play in the physical and athletic Sun Belt. He needs to start fighting for more guys out of high school rather than mining in search of diamonds.
The stats were trending upward compared to the last two years, but they aren't turning into wins. This team is falling into the same pitfalls that losing teams continually do. Sometimes, you lose so much that when you finally get it, the wins seem so hard to attain.
About the lack of vocal leadership, Jim screams at them so much during games that I'm not surprised there's no vocal leaders.

Re: App @ Ark LR
The last time we only garnered 1 conference was in Press Maravich's last season (74-75)at App (which he didn't finish). In fact, we had consecutive 1 win conference seasons under Press. His seasonal win totals in those three years went from 6 to 5 to 3. So, things could be worse. Bobby Cremins took over the coaching reins and produced a 13-14 season. By 78-79 he had us in the NCAA tournament. Fox's route to success is obviously taking a longer trip. I would think next year at this time we would know whether we are headed in the right direction or not. I do believe at the least he gets to finish out his contract of 5 years, after that...depends on his last year and half.
