Appalachian @ ECU: Game Thread

Unread post by asumike83 » Tue Nov 20, 2012 6:51 pm

Call me a glutton for punishment but I am paying for the live feed once again. Let's hope the signs of life from the last 10 minutes against Campbell carry over. Capel just said on the pre-game show that Trice is getting the nod at PG once again.

11-8 ECU, about 15:00 in the first half. Got off to a nice 6-2 start but ECU is making a little run. Made a couple of silly fouls down low but Jay Canty already has 6 and is on his way to another great game. Burgess ended up getting the start but Trice knocked down a 2 as soon as he came in.

Good news, we at least look we knew there was a game tonight!

We've also got 2 fouls on their starting PG, which is nice. Kid is a good player.

16-10 ECU, under 12 timeout. ASU will inbound after the break.

Offense is shaky but we are playing pretty solid defense and not giving up second chance points, which killed us at Campbell. We missed a couple of gimmes but we are hanging in there.

38-33 ECU at the half. We look much, much better than the last two games. Remains to be seen whether we can hang in there for another half but encouraging nonetheless.

They do not have anyone who can guard Jay Canty, he's got 12 points, 3 boards and a huge block that led to a lay-up in transition. Tevin Baskin and Nate Healy came to play as well.

Better than I expected. Maybe there is life after all.

46-40 ECU, 15:00 to play. We are hanging in there but just can't get over the hump. Every time we cut it to 2, ECU seems to put together a couple of buckets.

Looks like this one will go to the wire though, which is a pleasant surprise.

Under 12:00 timeout, 52-47 ECU. Tab Hamilton shooting two after the break.

Sampson is killing us on the boards and they just hit a big 3 after we trimmed the lead to one possession but we are fighting. Regardless of the final outcome, we will win some ballgames in the SoCon with more performances like this.

65-56 ECU, starting to get away.

ECU just got away with a blatant goaltend, get a 3-point play on the other end. So bad that not only did the ECU announcers say it was a bad call but Jason Capel even showed some emotion on the sideline.

Cut the lead to 72-69 with 3:00 to go. Canty and Healy are putting on a show and keeping us in this one.

82-72 final.

We missed some easy buckets down low the last few minutes, just ran out of gas. Overall, a great effort by our guys. Not the result any of us wanted but I do think it is headed in the right direction.

We've still got a lot of work to do but compared to the High Point/Campbell games, it was night and day. I'm not expecting miracles out of this team and I know we are likely in for another tough year, but I like to see progress and it was evident tonight.

If you feel encouraged about losing to a mediocre team by 10 while letting it slip away at the end, that's a major problem.

This is the best loss we've had thus far.

As I said, we still have a lot of work to do and it was not the outcome we were hoping for.

I'm not encouraged by the final margin but by what I saw on the court. This team looked completely lost against High Point and Campbell. ECU is as good or better than both of those teams and we competed for 40 minutes.

With the exception of Davidson and Charleston, ECU is also as talented as anyone we will see in SoCon play which gives me hope that we will be competitive in conference, especially once our starting PG returns.

If you watched the past two games and did not think there was progress made, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
