Puerto Rico Tip Off

Hi,

Hopefully a bunch of us will make it down to Puerto Rico for the in-season tournament. I've got reservations booked to get in just before tip-off on Thursday. Flights were on sale last week from a few cities, so worth taking a look!

Anyone else flying down?

The event hotel El Conquistador looks reasonable although Anthony Travel hasn't published rates yet (assume there will be some sort of flight/hotel discount for booking through a group travel provider).

Would have loved to but we booked a trip to the DR before this came together.

I've stayed at the El C in the past. It's a good island property. Casino, rooms & villas, golf course and a private island beach. Would love to make it happen again, but the calendar is already full that time of year.

I'll be hosting an open cocktail hour before tip-off against Iowa State for any app fans who'd like some drinks before the game at the Conquistador. They haven't told me which bar will the party will be at, I'll update when it occurs. There will be limited food and open bar for the hour. Hoping to see some of you there!

Reception will hopefully be at Drake's terrace. I may wait to see that at least a few people from here are coming before I confirm the deposit. Just so I don't have an open bar for a half dozen people lol.

Really tragic, hope the island recovers quickly.

On a far less important note.... most of the big hotels aren't taking reservations for a few weeks. I wonder if this affects tournament location. If they don't feel the tournament can be safely/effectively held in San Juan, hopefully they make a decision sooner rather then later so that everyone (schools, fans, locals) has clarity.

The games were to be played in Fajardo which was hit rather hard. I'll keep up with it and post once I know something.

I'm betting with power out for months it won't be held in PR.

It's gotta be a real longshot for a PR tipoff at this snapshot in time. On a somewhat brighter note, Delta and Southwest are scheduled to resume flights into San Juan tomorrow.

They are need $ and this is a way to bring $ to the island. Fair or not in allocation of resources I could see TPTB making decisions that push tourist $ and that would include this tourney.

I reached out to the event staff to see if they were reconsidering having the event in Puerto Rico. They told me they haven't made a decision about the event at this time...

If they can't safety and effectively hold the event in Puerto Rico, then my suggestion would be they move the event to Bahamas. The Battle 4 Atlantis occurs the following week so I imagine the event staff would be prepared to hold an additional event.

Understandable given the challenging environment on the island. As terrible as the situation may be, hopefully the US supports them strongly in their recovery, and the island comes out of this better & stronger.

Suffice to say my planned cocktail hour will not be happening.

I'm glad that the tournament organizers were able to find a suitable alternative venue to host the event and at the very least this will be much more accessible for our fanbase. Not to mention I'm sure SC fans will come out in force. Not sure yet if I'll still attend, Myrtle Beach doesn't have quite the same draw that Puerto Rico had lol.

Over/under on American Airlines jerkin me around on a refund.

Kudos to CCU for stepping up and taking in the tourney. With it on the mainland, hopefully there is a good fan base to travel down to Myrtle Beach and support the team.

Coastal hosted the Women's ACC last year. I thought they did a nice job, we were close to the action. Before you jump, my daughter works for an ACC team is my reason for attending.

The gracious overlords at American Airlines have agreed to waive my change fee to a different destination. The website shows the travel waiver being extended for at least another six months (not sarcastically, kudos to them) but traveling to Puerto Rico in December isn't going to be much good.

Should have booked through Anthony travel!
