It continually amazing to me that they keep on coming up with terrible ideas within the hive-mind and bring up "marketing professionals" who are terrible, yet never ask the season ticket holders and those who are there every game for years for their input. There's not that many of us. And surveys designed to get the answers they want don't count.

Back a few years ago athletics decided to make a ham fisted attempt at nicknaming the Holmes Center. This was after David Jackson and some others had gotten "The Rock" name to stick for KBS. The were dubbing HCC "The Black Hole". Instead of working on creating a grassroots buzz and letting it gain momentum over time, they went on a full court press. It was announced, well in advance of the season and they got the bookstore to start carrying "Black Hole" shirts and such. There was a thread on one of the boards, may have been the old one where people went to town mocking it. By the time the season started, it was pretty much a joke. It was marketing saying "it's basketball, we can force a name".

As my favorite mock was at the time, "Welcome to Black Hole, where basketball hopes and dreams come to die."

It is coming back to the whole scenario of people who don't LOVE or UNDERSTAND the culture and history of Boone and App State as a whole. Props to the AD but should have ponied up what people like David Jackson was worth to keep on staff. Short change people financially for awhile and it eventually comes back to bite you in the butt. Now, no disrespect to those who have been hired but you have to be a connector aka one that can socialize with all people in order to keep up the community family feel and atmosphere that is App State. You can't have the boring, dull personality of which one Senior Associate AD has. This person never remembers meeting significant donors and barely can remember a name, but so goes life. There are a handful of alums from 2006-2012 that would do anything to be back in Boone, but for some reason the powers that be rather hire below average people than quality people who would definitely improve aspects like basketball attendance and game day atmospheres.

When I was in school, late 80's, the "Cave Crew" was used. Don't know how or why that name came up. Maybe something thought up on WASU possibly? In any event, the idea was for the crew to sit behind the opposition bench. But, the only time I remember many students showing up was for the ETSU game. At that time, they were the top dog in the conference, and may have even been ranked in the top 20 a time or two. Les Robinson was coaching and the students would yell "sit down Les". I think App maybe had an upset win one of those seasons.

I thought the fan section was Mountaineer Maniacs. I remember seeing signs for that plastered all over campus during my App tenure in the late 90's, early 00's. Is that not a thing anymore?

On the topic of marketing, I was one of the few students at the game and invested tonight and I honestly think the marketing is somehow getting worse. During one of the timeouts they literally placed "YMCA." I know you're trying to make a family atmosphere and stuff but maybe that's not what we need if we want to increase student support. You guys complain about having to hear rap music I'm sorry but that would be way better than what we had tonight. There's just no evident new or exciting ideas to increase support this year. I know "winning" would do more than any marketing idea but come on this is bad
