Re: Houston Fancher
We now know what they are capable of doing, but the key is to continue to play like this. Just like the JMU game shouldn't be used to judge this team's season, this great win proves what we can do but it doesn't guarantee it the next time. Let's hope the JMU debacle and this incredible performance are exactly what this group needed to propel them going forward.

Does tonight’s W quell any of the naysayers? Interested to hear the negatives....

Re: Houston Fancher
Folks, I am stunned. After watching this team the past few seasons, and especially the way we started this year, I wouldn't have bet on the Apps winning this one against Davidson. This is a great win and hopefully the team can carry this confidence into our next game versus VCU.
For anyone who was at the game, how was the crowd attendance?
Again, great win!

Re: Houston Fancher
The only "former" App affiliated individual I would have BACK would be Matt McMahon. While the win over Davidson was awesome, I say that if we can't win 15 games with the talent we have then there's no point in giving Fox another year.

Capel won 1 or 2 that they shouldn't have. Wait until we have a trend.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

Re: Houston Fancher
Talent is relative. We arse light years ahead of the Capel fiasco but not where we want to be either. Fox will get it done. Just image the effort to raise the Titanic.....That is what Fox is doing.sixtoes9134 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 6:58 amThe only "former" App affiliated individual I would have BACK would be Matt McMahon. Re: Houston Fancher
Jason Capel's 4 year winning percentage .431
Jim Fox's 3 year winning percentage .333
App State was 9-21 in Capel's last year. His worst season. He had two winning seasons within conference play.
App State was 12-17 in Fox's first year. To this point his best season. He has yet to have a winning season in conference.
The program's difficulties that Capel created are well-documented and no doubt left Fox with much to clean up. By all accounts he was able to do that with respect to the academic shortcomings.
In year 4, he has his team, with his players, some of whom are in their third year with Coach Fox. I don't think it unreasonable to expect this team to show a considerable improvement over the first three teams that he has put on the court. The Davidson win certainly would indicate that things could be headed in the right direction. That trend needs to continue before we can assert that Fox will get it done. That's not a statement of doubt but we can't look at the JMU game and say all is lost, this team is terrible any more than we can say the Davidson win is proof this team has arrived. Most certainly next year, we should expect App State to have their best team in close to a decade. I would like to think Coach Fox will be the leader of that team because this season provides the evidence that we are going in the right direction.

Re: Houston Fancher
First, congrats to Coach Fox, staff, and team on the win over Davidson! Keep up the good work!
Second, Houston Fancher is a solid coach, but an even better person off the court! For those that have absolutely no clue, he is a true family man, that always had a family atmosphere within his programs at App. Due to a few wanna be "big shots" who donate $ to the athletic department, he was relieved of his duties, enter Buzz-who Charlie Cobb promised a lot of improvements both physically and financially. After Buzz led the team to a 24 win season, these promises were not kept...Charlie should have asked the same "big shots" to donate to keep Buzz in black and gold but let him go to UNC Wilmington. The scenario was fairly simple, hire Matt McMahon, who is an alum, loved by both players and alumni alike. But no, Cobb decided to offer to an individual who simply wasn't close to being ready. That isn't to slight Capel at all, as it was a no brainer to accept as it was a Head Coach gig. App basketball had in Houston and Buzz and the majority of their staff members, individuals who loved Boone, the people, the community, the campus, and embraced all that is Appalachian State University.

Re: Houston Fancher
You actually think there was even a remote chance that Buzz was staying. He was up here without his family and living in a temporary residence. There was no dollar amount that would have kept him here. Houston loved Boone but have no reason to believe that Buzz did. Know for certain that Mrs. Buzz didn't like it here.appknowledgeispower wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 10:13 amFirst, congrats to Coach Fox, staff, and team on the win over Davidson! Keep up the good work!

Re: Houston Fancher
Just remember, Buzz's second stint was still the most App has paid a coach in a single season. Capel made much less than Fox is still making less than Buzz did.

Re: Houston Fancher
Something we all need to remember...Capel was not in the Sunbelt...he took a good SOCON team and made them bad...really really bad. Oh and the players weren't graduating.
Fox has taken a team that had NOTHING in the cupboard...has transitioned them to the Sunbelt which is a better conference than SOCON with zero talent. He fixed our APR and now we have a talented group that looks promising....
If he gets 12 plus wins this year...he deserves another season...
I do believe at some point a good competitive product should be displayed on that gym floor but Fox of all coaches need to be given ample time...five years at least

Re: Houston Fancher
To be fair, the APR scores were already improving before Capel left, and there isn't that much difference in the level of competition between the SoCon and the Sun Belt.
But otherwise, yes, Fox didn't even rebuild from the foundation up. He had to find the plot, clear the trees, grade the land, dig the hole...
There's a promising amount of talent on hand right now. Hopefully we all see how the season unfolds and don't make every game a referendum on the coach's job, good or bad.

Re: Houston Fancher
Houston had 10 years TEN YEARS to get us to the dance. There are a lot of good family men who get fired for non performance. So for Heaven's sake stop with the Houston....Matt talk. A decision was made to try to move to the next level and it didnt work.I'm looking for a coach not a preacher.appknowledgeispower wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 10:13 amFirst, congrats to Coach Fox, staff, and team on the win over Davidson! One of the biggest myths in App State sports lore is that Buzz’ ugly second exit is Buzz’ fault.appknowledgeispower wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 10:13 amFirst, congrats to Coach Fox, staff, and team on the win over Davidson! Keep up the good work!
