ASU @ Samford - Game Thread

Unread post by asumike83 » Sat Jan 19, 2013 7:22 pm

Tip-off is in about 40 minutes and this is a big game for us. How we respond to Thursday's meltdown could go a long way in determining how we finish the season.

Game is being streamed free on the Samford website:
http://samfordsports.com/showcase/

Most of the sports books have this game as a pick 'em or Samford as a 1-point favorite. As we all know, ASU had won 5 in a row before inexplicably blowing a 19-point lead in the final 6:30 on Thursday at UTC. Samford is riding a 3-game win streak with road wins over Charleston and The Citadel, followed by a 64-60 home win over Western on Thursday night.

No problem man! If it's anything like the football stream, the quality will be good and the announcers will be extreme homers.

I stand corrected, video and audio are pretty bad. Anyone else's stream looking/sounding weak?

Awful start, 12-4 Samford. Healy got a silly technical to give them 2 points and after 33 seconds of good defense, a 3-point prayer from Samford got answered.

Mine is low quality, and the App audio feed is behind by enough to not be great for watching the video and listening to our audio.

I'd almost rather mute it than listen to their awful announcer. I thought UTC was bad but I've never heard a more whiny play-by-play than Samford, in football or basketball. We hit 2 3's to make it 12-10 after trailing 12-4 and he tried to say it should be 12-9. Every whistle on Samford is questionable and every call on us is a great job by the officials. DJ is certainly a hometown announcer as well but this guy is a clown.

46-41 at the half. Jay Canty and some timely 3's from Neal and Hamilton have kept us in it but if we don't defend better in the second half, we are going home with an 0-2 road trip.

Every time Samford wants to trap, we dribble right into the corner and cough it up. Incredible.

Pretty uncanny...you would think by the time a guy gets to college level play he would know better but we seem to do it over and over again.

BTW, GSU just got drilled at home by the Citadel after back to back wins over Davidson and Charleston. What a league the SoCon is this year!

65-60 Samford, 5:06 to play. Still in it but we've got to get some stops.

4 stops and only one basket to show for them...that hurts.

Might have just sealed our fate. Healy hits a 3 to get us within 2, we get a stop and then turn it over. And one for Samford next time down, 70-65 Samford, 1:21 to go.

72-68 bad guys!

We make some of the dumbest passes of any college team I have seen!
Go APPS!

We are not a good team. Can we stop with this ridiculous pie in the sky delusion that capel is the next Shaka smart? He is not. It's not the end of the world but we beat a d2 team, Presbyterian which might as well be, wofford cause they played their worst game in 10 years and now we've blown a 20 point lead in 8 minutes to lose and choked this game off to a sub .500 team. Again the so con ain't good this year and neither are we. So who's the next coach gonna be?

Had opportunities to steal it, but Samford was the better team. That's what makes the UTC loss hurt.

Very disheartening road trip. At this point, the goal is just to get a bye. At least GSU at home is a winnable game. SoCon still wide open, just stinks that we couldn't make some moves up this week.

I really can't tell whether this team is good or not. It's obvious that players like Canty and Healy can be game-changers, and we've seen good performances out of guys like Baskin and Neal, but they're inconsistent. The Trice and Okam experiments have failed, as both are 8th men at best. The inability to close games is an epidemic that goes beyond the Capel era.

We're not bad, but we're not good, either. What are we? It's been three years now and we still don't have an answer.

And on that note, time to watch the two kings of mid-major basketball duke it out and try to figure out what they have that we need to perhaps reach that level one day.

Very frustrating game. I really hoped that putting together a win streak would give this team the confidence to execute late in games but they turned the ball over in crunch time again. There is no great team in the SoCon this year and most of these games are going to be tight. Right now, we cannot finish. Simple as that.

I agree. Healy and Canty are both good players, no question. We need someone else to be consistent if we are going to get better.

We just can't close a game down the stretch. We blew our share of opportunities tonight but Samford played well also. It's the UTC game that really stings, I'm still in disbelief that we gave that one away. I'd have taken a 1-1 road trip any day and we coughed up a golden opportunity to get a conference road win.
