Appalachian @ Georgia Southern - Game Thread

Unread post by asumike83 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 10:55 am

Appalachian (9-12, 5-5 SoCon, 2-9 Road) at Georgia Southern (10-13, 4-6 SoCon, 6-3 Home)

Very big game in Statesboro tonight. A win could put us alone at #4 in the conference, a loss could put us in a 4-team tie for #5, depending on how the rest of tonight's SoCon games go. Most of the sports books have GSU as a favorite by 3 or 3.5 points.

They have been a much better team at home this season but still puzzling results. Got wins at home over Davidson and Charleston but also lost to NC A&T and got blown out by The Citadel on their home court.

IMO, we must hold serve at home and steal at least one on the road to have a shot at the #4 seed. Tonight's game and 2/17 at UNCG are our best shots to do that.

Audio will be available on GoASU.com and according to our website, their will also be live video available (http://gseagles.com/watch-listen), although I do not see any links for it at the moment. Hopefully, it will be put up closer to game time. If it is anything like baseball, the GSU site will allow you to pay $2 for a one-time event. If I can find any more info on where to get the stream, I will post it here.

Just got some info off the GSU board. They will have free streaming video of the game and it will be embedded at game time for anyone who would like to watch.

Link (same as above): http://gseagles.com/watch-listen

No, you're supposed to get excited because it's App State and the season is not over. That's the thing about basketball, the regular season means next to nothing because, especially in our league, a team could get hot, win the conference tournament and make the big dance. It's not about winning the regular season it's about setting yourself up with as good a chance as possible to win the tournament.

We are not is a position to have such fair weather fans.

4th does give us a bye in the first round. Winning 3 games is easier than 4.

Do you see any evidence that we can do that?

Barbie Breedlove won the SoCon tourney in a year where she should have been fired, it is a mid-major tourney anything can happen.

(Note: she then got matched up with/@ Tennessee and you can guess how that went.)
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

I would like to see us make a run, get to the dance, have a halfway competitive game and some bigger school hire Capel away to be an assistant or a head coach.

I wish I could say that this very same thing hasn't crossed my mind. That one weekend run set the women's program back a good five or six years. That said, I do hope we win the tournament, get into the First Four, win and then pull off an upset in the Round of 64 -- followed by a SoCon regular-season/tournament sweep in our last year in the league. However, the odds for the former (however long) are much better than the latter.

25-15 GSU, about 8 to play in the first.

Really poor defense against a team that is not strong offensively. Gambling too much and getting burned.

37-27 at the half. We're lucky to not be down 20, that was an awful half of basketball on both ends. We'll get run out of the gym if we don't come out much sharper after the break.

It is so frustrating that we continue to struggle to break a press.
