Encouraged by the increase in attendance and the crowd noise I head on the telecast. Encouraged about basketbakk for the first time in a while.

Most full ive seen it.APPdiesel wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 10:09 amI was there for a pretty full (60% maybe) game vs Davidson around 2005 or 6.hotrod2001 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 12:44 amHas that place ever been packed for a game besides the arena opener against Carolina?APPdiesel wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2019 11:56 pmSome twitter posts make it look a little better than it looked on TV. Not sure how accurate this is (I was at this game too and remember it being more than this), but the ESPN box score has the attendance for Davidson November 26, 2007 as 3,248:
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... =273302026
Curry had 38 that night with 9 threes, tying a Holmes Center record.

Yeah I didnt remember it being a sell out but I thought I remembered it being at least half full. Guess not. Memories start to get a little fuzzy 12 years out.

Re: Eastern Carolina U
I disagree. We used to sell out Varsity (around 7,000) for Marshall and ETSU (who each brought at least 500 fans) and even for bigger games against Charlotte and Southern Miss in the late 80's and early 90's. Back then, students went to games regardless of the opponents and we only had 12,000 students
All we need is a culture change where the students get excited about basketball. With Friday/Sunday conference games, the alumni can come up for a basketball/skiing weekend. There are brighter days ahead for our program.

That was the year Davidson went to the Elite 8. It was the following year, after they had become famous from that run, that the crowd was really huge (listed here as 9,313):asucrutch23 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 12:34 pmNot sure how accurate this is (I was at this game too and remember it being more than this), but the ESPN box score has the attendance for Davidson November 26, 2007 as 3,248:

Re: Eastern Carolina U
That says "capacity" of 9,313. However, if you click over to the game recap, it does say it was a Holmes record of 8,350.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 1:27 pmThat was the year Davidson went to the Elite 8. You know what, I'm just having an epiphany looking at the box score remembering that Curry was limited in that game (only playing 18 minutes) due to foul trouble. This is definitely the big crowd everyone is thinking of. January 12, 2009.

App averaged a whopping 1,268 last season (16,490 total attendance). It would be awesome to see App average over 3k for the season and put the attendance in line with UTC (3,175 avg).

I went to the WF v Columbia game this past Sunday after getting back from Columbia. WF won on a last second shot and there was no student section to speak of. The Deacons are going to struggle in the ACC based on what I saw. They did have a cool promotion going on with Chic-fil-A called the "Fowl Shot Challenge" where every fan in attendance gets a free sandwich if an opponent misses back to back free throws in the last 8 minutes of the game. Think it's a cool idea to keep fans engaged and staying until the end. Wish App could do something similar with the local restaurants to help promote the team. Below is an article about some different ACC bball promotions.

Re: Eastern Carolina U
Times have changed. A culture shift might help but especially on weeknights we aren’t getting anywhere near 8000 in attendance unless all the stars align. I just wish we had something smaller that was more of a basketball specific facility that we could fill out more consistently. Varsity had the advantage of being right in the middle of campus. Attendance was probably helped by this factor alone.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 1:25 pmI disagree. Re: Eastern Carolina U
It was a great atmosphere in those days and Apke had some good teams that were very entertaining to watch. I still think a big reason for a lot of the good turnouts is the location of Varsity. Can't tell you how many times I went to eat and after dinner we all jumped over to Varsity. Half the times I didn't even know there was a game that night but I would see the sign out side and go in. Point is there were a lot of casual fans that were captured because of a good product and being dead smack in the center of campus next to a food hall.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2019 1:25 pmI disagree. Re: Eastern Carolina U
couldnt fit a scoreboard in varsity like the Holmes has... May get more students, but probably wouldnt get as many non-students at varsity, and they pay money for tickets

Agreed. Our students line the sideline from back line to back line in football and it creates the best atmosphere in G5.

The Atlanta Hawks do the same thing with Chick Fil A. I was at a game last year, and it took me until almost the end of the game to realize why people were going so nuts during foul shots when the Hawks were down like 25. Next up: Spartan Invitational, Greensboro. Friday 4:30 vs Montana State, Saturday 3:30 vs Tennessee Tech, Monday 7pm vs UNC-G. Should win all 3 but UNCG has been good lately, so winning 2/3 would be great.
