A huge statement about the state of our program.

What are you talking about? There are 3 threads about this game, although all 3 were started during the 2nd OT.

People only want to post when they can bash the program for another loss.
It's rarely a thing of beauty when we take the court, but give the guys credit they rallied from 8 down to send it to OT. Regardless of one's attitude about SoCon basketball, our guys do have a chance to finish with the #4 seed. Perhaps not an earth shattering accomplishment, but it is better to garner that position than not to gain it.

I was listening to the game and had thought about starting a thread but I've been trying to chase down all the offers we've extended in the past two days plus working on the baseball recruiting pages. Any win is a good win right now so congrats to the Apps.

I was at this game....and I am glad we won. The Samford asst. small black guy has a foul mouth and berates the players cussing them on the bench loud enough that we could hear him 6 rows back! I addition, he "gave" our section the finger after one of his rants when a fan yelled at him to keep it clean!
Good win.
One comment: Other than taking the kid out of the game we have the dog gonedest group of college players i have seen. We take a shot (3 pointer) with 16 seconds left on the shot clock while the score was tied...in OT.
In addition, we miss two back to back finger rolls...
In addition, we shoot with shot clock running down up 3 with about 20 seconds left....GET THE FREAKING REBOUND and then try to thread the needle to the baseline, in the paint, only to have it intercepted with 12 or so seconds left and give Samford a chance to tie with a 3.
Is that coaching or playing?

Sounds like Democracy in action, to me.

Samford's team is no better than ours, has a worse overall record and a student body 1/5 the size of ASU but they had over 2K for their last Thursday night home game. We have not broken 2K for a mid-week game all season.

I was there with the usual crew. With all the time Big C and T-Dog spent live tweeting the game, I might as well have started a thread too.
Anyway, Mike Neal literally looked like he was shaving points last night. He bounced it off his foot bringing it down the court twice and made two consecutive bone headed plays at the end of the second OT that could have easily cost us the game. All he had to do was hold the ball, as we were up and there was 13 seconds left, but he lofted up a three. We got the rebound, kicked it out to him, he had ANOTHER chance to hold on to the rock for the W, and he just throws it to a Samford player! We would have lost bad if not for a career game by Jamal Trice.

I truly believe this team would be looking at a much better year if we had a true point guard running this team. Our usual starting PG quite often finishes with more turnovers than assists. Granted we have a better record since his return and he does add some energy to the team's play but he really plays too out of control to be the guy responsible for running the show. I have some hope that help is on the way next season.
Jamal demonstrated last night what he is capable of providing this team. It would be nice to see him finish off his career with some more performances like that.

We started Burgess over Neal, but Neal played more. I think you've got to go with Burgess as much as possible Saturday and in Ashville. He makes better decisions and has proven his ability to hit clutch shots.

I agree. If we had even an AVERAGE point guard, we would be substantially better. I've never thought Neal was a true PG. But I actually think he would flourish as a SG.

Players have to have some skills, that a given, but it takes a coach to make a team and to make players better. Coaches teach and keep players focused and form the right mix of players.
If players look clueless, IMHO it's the coach. I mean come on there are plenty of good bball players out there.

That was our 5th crowd of less than 1,000 people this season. We have had only 3 crowds over 2,000 with the highest being Davidson (2,910), next WCU (2,852), and the season opener with Montreat (2,201).
Average with one game left is 1,485. It's doubtful that number will increase after Saturday.

Attendance has been awful. I've been to every game this year as a student. Gonzo, T-Dog and BigC as my witnesses.
I try to bring as many people to the games as possible and last night no one came. Excuses ranging from we suck why waste my time to who goes anyways. I just bite my tongue and say that's your choice but I will always support my Mountaineers in any sport. It bothers me as much as most of the alumni trust me. However it will not change until they put a winning product on the court consistently or beat a big name team/program. Baseball has done this by beating Oklahoma, NC State, LSU, and Virginia. Their attendance and interest has gone up significantly on campus.
Tomorrow should be a decent crowd with the "BlackOut" promotion they have going on. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Go Apps!

Actually, outside of football our fanbase doesn't show for most of our athletic teams. Our women's basketball team has been a conference power for the last 3-4 years, playing in the conference championship game the past two seasons, and yet they rank 7th in the conference in attendance. Our baseball team's home opener had the smallest opening day crowd of any SoCon team. We pack it in for football but we can't really brag about our attendance overall.

How can we have good attendance with this sad excused for a sports marketing department. Here is yesterday's promotion for the game.
Who is in control of that facebook account for Christ sake. Is Appalachian a joke to them? Their professionalism and shitty work ethic is the only joke I see, and I'm not laughing.

While you may have a point, I'd like to know what the SoCon baseball attendance figures are when the season is wrapped up. Appalachian is at a disadvantage come the beginning of the season due to weather.
