It's part Kerns defensive philosophy (pack line that UVA runs) to sacrifice offensive rebounds in order to get the defense back and stop transition baskets.APPRIDE wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:49 pmI also dislike returning back down court while the shot is in the air...wasn’t there some discussion last year we were not going to go for offensive boards because of analytics?

When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Smart. Helps stop the transition points and lets your defense get set.
Gotta say, proud as hell of how our defense is playing this year. Those dudes are getting after it!

Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
The only real analytic that matters is wins and losses and we are ahead of that one. One negative aspect of our offense that I hope doesn’t bite us in the butt is the love of the 3. Admittedly I’m older and appreciate having a true big man who can score in the paint. I hate watching the NBA as it’s just a three fest. For me it’s just not enjoyable. Hopefully our DNA won’t be to fall behind by 15 every game and have to claw back in the last 8:00 for wins. I believe that coach called a very timely TO yesterday. We were making a huge comeback and had gotten their lead cut to about 5 but it looked like we were content to jack 3’s. He must have made some adjustments because the motion increased and we got some close easy buckets. I have really enjoyed watching these guys. We really can get after it on defense and hopefully the positive progression continues.

The development of our players since last year is what’s impressed me the most about this team. That’s a reflection of good coaches and player commitment in the offseason.
I noticed on the verbal commits site that we’ve offered Donovan Gregory’s brother and Justin Forrest’s brother for the 2022 class. It would be neat to have some siblings in the program, although Justin wouldn’t be around at that point.

The successes of the last two years really highlight the failures of the previous regime. Coaching can turn seemingly mediocre players and play and turn them into winners.

Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
While its great to be 3-1 in Belt play, its worth noting that we sweep those two teams last year. It's obviously a dangerous approach to trail by substantial margins each game. Its a testament to our guys that they have the confidence that they can come back but you can't make a living playing that way.
That said, I would rather be 3-1 than 1-3 at this point.

Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
exactly. That’s what I was saying, it’s not necessarily a terrible habit, it’s more that Kerns said he believed in the percentages and stated we’d be better off getting back and set for defense then going for offensive boards... but to my untrained eye though it’s just difficult to watch so many wide open uncontested rebounds off the rim for the other team...JTApps1 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 8:18 amIt's part Kerns defensive philosophy (pack line that UVA runs) to sacrifice offensive rebounds in order to get the defense back and stop transition baskets.APPRIDE wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:49 pmI also dislike returning back down court while the shot is in the air...wasn’t there some discussion last year we were not going to go for offensive boards because of analytics?

Worth noting if you count the loss of Lewis that we lost four of five starters from last years team.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 12:55 pmWhile its great to be 3-1 in Belt play, its worth noting that we sweep those two teams last year. Gregory and Delph look so much better this year, their development has been a wonderful revelation.

I’d add James Lewis too. Without his added bulk and development, we have essentially zero inside game, although Gregory isn’t scared to mix it up down there with the bigs.NavyApp wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 1:27 pmapp97 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 12:06 pmThe development of our players since last year is what’s impressed me the most about this team. Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
Worth noting that both teams are picked to finish below us in the standings. GS lost virtually everyone off their squad from last year. The point is we beat two of the weaker teams in league at home. Its not a criticism because the level of play is well beyond what it was just two years ago. Any time you can play defense, you have a chance. Sweeping a 1-3 USA on the road may give us a better sense of where things stand within the Belt.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 1:23 pmWorth noting if you count the loss of Lewis that we lost four of five starters from last years team.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 12:55 pmWhile its great to be 3-1 in Belt play, its worth noting that we sweep those two teams last year. Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
Troy and Southern both have solid coaches and both played solid defense. I don’t think the preseason rankings mean much, especially in the belt. The only team that has consistently been in the top 2-3 in conference based on preseason predictions is Ga State.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 4:21 pmWorth noting that both teams are picked to finish below us in the standings. I watched a little of USA at coastal. They looked somewhat out of control to me, based on a few minutes of viewing. But they have shot threes reasonably well, so our close outs in the pac-line defense will need to be solid.

It’s going to be ok, Kerns is a good coach, we have good players. It’s ok to celebrate these wins and have hope for the season.

Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
Can we just make the thread title Mountaineer Basketball vs Other School. We could do a "MBB vs " and a separate "WBB vs " thread but they are playing the same school and often at the same time or maybe an hour different due to time zones.
The women deserve our support as well and the thread title is making them appear to be "less than."
I know not as many are watching or listening to the women compared to the men and that is true at most every school outside of Tenn and UConn more than likely, but lets show our women or Mountaineer love and respect.

I see improvement-across the board- player development stands out as well of course , defensive fundamentals and just toughness. The willingness to sit players until they buy in is not something to be taken for granted. We’ve had staffs that wouldn’t do it. The trend is definitely “ up”.

Or you could just start a “WBB vs” thread. Knock yourself out. The thread title is specific to the team that we’re discussing and in no way, shape, or form diminishes, dismisses, or degrades any other program or team at Appalachian State University.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 8:38 pmCan we just make the thread title Mountaineer Basketball vs Other School. Come on people, it has to be BB vs whomever. Remember, we must keep all gender out of it. Some people are confused about gender these days! Ha

Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern Discussion (1/8 6pm & 1/9 4pm)
I am just trying to make it easy to discuss both games that are going on at the same time. Two threads just mean jumping back and forth which is not an ideal situation to me. I Realize the vast majority of the posts will likely be about MBB but that gives the women a bit of space to be discussed as well. I would, like to think we wont ALL App teams to be well and not just FB, MBB and baseball. Wrestling was also ignored over the weekend.
