MBB vs Central Penn, Tues 12/5 8pm

Unread post by APPdiesel » Tue Dec 05, 2023 9:25 am

Time to see the culture shift.

The Auburn win should really kick the student attendance into another gear. Week night attendance will always be an issue for people who don’t live on the mountain but if a third of the students who come to football games came to basketball games we’d pack Holmes every time.

Dustin Kerns said it himself (paraphrasing), it’s not about who App State is playing it’s THAT App State is playing.

Hope the students and high country residents really come out and get loud for another performance!!!

The coaches and team are doing their part . Now it’s up to the rest of us to do ours. Especially the students. Showing up is the minimum.

Show up and show out! Got to get the sports marketing department to find some serious great freebie opps. for students......pizza, canned beer with ID, etc. 20k student body, should at least be able to get 5k to each game!!!!

Not trying to start an argument with you, but I just don't think giving away stuff really affects attendance. I remember some great giveaways (tshirts, pizza, etc.) when I was in school, and I still didn't go because App wasn't very good in basketball at the time.
A good product and quality opponents will bring attendance. I really think this Auburn win could be a huge bump. From what I've been able to see on TV, it looks like the students are already showing up at a decent rate. I think it's getting other folks who aren't in school to come watch basketball that is the trick.
If I lived within 30-45 minutes, I'd make a lot more effort to go for sure.

No worries. I agree with your points mostly as well. But it does entice, students think oh we can go get a few dinner and a few alcoholic beverages (for those of age) and support MBB.....no brainer IMO. Yes, it does not help that Capel put App MBB in a terrible place.

It would be interesting to see a poll of all students to ask them what entices them to attend sports other than football. Is the quality of the team absolutely the number one priority? I've watched some games involving other schools who aren't very good and their student section is packed and loud. How many schools of our size put virtually all of the students behind the basket? Would it make a difference in bigger conference games if the entire lower level was filled with students (at least on one side)? Overall I think that times are just different. Too many other things to do.

Winning is the difference for sure. (many sentences to follow)
There have been numerous "big games" with high output marketing over the years that had good attendance and the team lost. This was by far the biggest big game and finally got over the hump and won the game. For 10-20 years the attendance is what it is because people want to support - but 75% of the fans did not expect to win, mirror that with football and the winning expectation of the fan is 99% we will win. App bball has been in such a hole for a long time with not good coaching, conspiracies, miss opportunities and zero exciting coaching personalities and so on (until now), just a big mountain to get over. We have a coach now who can coach and wants excitement - will it happen and will Kerns stay is the question. If Kerns wins 25 games this year, does well in tourney, etc and takes another job, the process will have to start all over again - I hope that does not happen. Now that we have a big win, the AD and staff need to create core excitement and drop that high roller and advertising fandom attachment and get in touch with the students and core base. I personally believe finding a student that can lead the students in excitement and give them a mic for the student section and some rules / guidelines and students will have a great damn time - get loud, get rowdy and stand up.

We only had 3k students for Auburn. I think 1K students is a good start. I'd be thrill if we could get anything over that consistently.

Surely some discounted beer for some games would get them out. Would think we could start averaging 3k students per game somehow.

The majority of on-campus students can't legally purchase beer.

True, but discounts usually do get more people there. And if it is not just for students it should bring in locals.

This reminds me of some of the deals that minor league baseball fields would offer to get fans out, it has backfired a couple of times.

Deals are not going to do it, matter a fact, don't, it looks desperate. Keep winning, and make sure the "production" of the game is fun and engaging . . . this will make it a happening and bring folks out. I really wish we had a better opponent coming in for this game, not necessarily another household name, but someone anyone has ever heard of would have been great. Not blaming anyone, just sucks to have this be the team we are trying to keep momentum going with. Keep the fans engaged Athletic department, good music, chants, time-out fun with student challenges (not little kids per se), etc.

I can't believe I am about to type this but I truly think it is a problem. Make the wifi work inside Holmes center. They want to be on their phones 24/7.

Are you suggesting a “down with disco” night at HCC?

In case Twitter is blocked for you, Bryant Greene is starting tonight and Kerns says he deserves it through his hard work.

Seemed to work down here for thirsty Thursday for the Dash I believe. But always a chance of failure.
