MBB vs Ga Southern, 6:30 p.m. ET, Thursday, Jan. 25 of the 2024th year of the Common Era, Wear Black, not as cold

Unread post by T-Dog » Sun Jan 21, 2024 12:07 am

The Mountaineers are on a four-game win streak and sit alone atop the Sun Belt at 6-1. But there's some nipping of the heels by Troy, Southern Miss and others, so every game remains crucial.

Georgia Southern of Statesboro went 0fer in non-conference play, but is 4-3 in Sun Belt play so far, including an 86-70 beating of Georgia State of Atlanta on Saturday, a 44-point turnaround of just a week before. The Eagles also beat Coastal by 3, so they're almost on what Lou Brown would call a winning streak. I for one, do not want to see a Georgia Southern winning streak. Three of their four wins are at home, with the lone road dub at ULM.

This is apparently the Black Out game, so wear black to the game if you go. If can't go, still wear black. Paint your deck black. Don't paint your dog black, that's dangerous.

Also, this thread is under #BeatETSU rules, meaning no talk of future games until this one is well and truly in hand or over. The only exception is when it's announced whether the Saturday game will be on ESPN2 or ESPNU. That announcement should come Sunday, as in today when this was posted.

I cannot attend in person, but I have some black App gear I can wear. And I drive a black automobile...so there's that.

App up to #72 in the NET Ratings as of today. Auburn & UNCW wins both aging well. Also #1 top shot blocking team in the country at the moment.

72 and just passed NC State. Wake is next, then Duke and Cheat.

I won’t be at the game, but I’ll be wearing black, especially since the lady who teaches next door to me is a Southern “grad.” Surprisingly, she’s an incredibly nice person, she’s a very good teacher, AND she has all her teeth.

I know it is not used as prevalent as the NET rankings but we should be between #4 and #6 in the Mid-Major Poll, which Kerns is a voter in.

Hopefully both App and JMU win mid-week so the game on Saturday will be a big one. If neither of us move up since Drake and Indiana State had big wins then I think the winner should at least move up. It would be interesting to see how long it takes us to get votes in the AP or Coaches poll if we win out. Just wish we did not have those losses to NIU and Oregon State.

What's the criteria for being relegated to the Mid Major poll? I never understood who decided that certain conferences are P and some are G.

I'm guessing it's typical one-bid leagues. Traditional multi-bid leagues like the American, A10, Big East and Mountain West are not included along with the P5.

The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Coastal Athletic, Conference USA, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast, Western Athletic.

I don't know what made them pick only these leagues though.

Thanks and one word you used has always been my problem with these polls- Them. Who is exactly is them? There is no commissioner over college football or basketball and no real governing body. The dividing line for G's and P's seems arbitrary and now just accepted. Either you are FBS or FCS (or D2, D3) in football or D1,2 or 3 in basketball. I get that in reality we are a mid major but it ultimately makes no sense.

Some conferences raised a stink when they were included in the poll, others appreciated the publicity. It means absolutely nothing unless you think it does, but that's every poll.

I agree. The P5 and G5 stuff, with the term origins being unknown, are particularly irritating. If the Sun Belt Conference ended up having a higher power rating than the Big 12 one year, would it become a P5 instead of a G5? My guess is probably not.

I have one small problem with it. It is the year 2024, but the 2025th year. Year 0 is the first year, year 1 is the 2nd year and so on.

The more I think about it I think the thread title should include an address as well. We mostly have the temporal facts in place for most of us but we might need spatial information now. And you might be correct about the year thing.

There were several leagues who use to be considered mid-major and no longer are though. I feel like if you include every league that I think of when you say mid-major that we would actually be 8 or 9. To me a mid-major is a 1-bid or 2-bid league.

Joe Dwyer and Angela Lento run that website but I am wondering if it is decides by the coaches who vote.
