My son was there and texted me after the game asking why some of the students rushed the court. Guess for some it's just the thing to do. Don't rush the court after an expected win.

Well, they have a lot of event staff on the student section baseline and that slowed progress. It was a game we should have won so not really an upset and it was not a last second win that is just is full of unbridled emotions.

And I am sure some of those students have not been in that environment before and just wanted to experience a rushing the court environment. Had we won at the buzzer with a block or sinking our basket I think the effort would have been more vigorous.

I may be outdated, but I thought the 5 seconds to inbound rule is in play when they rolled the ball.
(Not the 10 seconds to half court).
Great question. Does the 5 second rule end when release of bball or when player catches it. I would think when player catches it..so it would technically be in play. With that said, never seen it called.
Just looked it up, at all levels of basketball the 5 second rule ends at the release of the ball, not when another player takes possession.
That is an awful rule. You have 5 seconds to inbound the ball and 10 to get it over half court. When a team rolls the ball neither rule applies. I've seen a few instances when it's ridiculous. That being said, and I don't want to criticize coaches who know way more than I do, but I'd love to hear coach explain why we let our opponents just roll it past half court. Why not put one defender in the back court to make them run clock? This is almost like the prevent defense in football.
While it took forever for the ball to get to half court, in reality they were saving 2 or 3 seconds off the game clock vs. a normal inbounds and dribble it across.

What made the win even better is that their last 3 minute execution was near perfect (they had what seemed like 5 straight possessions of 3 point scoring —either from long range or an and1) and they still couldn’t cut the deficit to less than 4.
Once it was 10-6, we controlled the game the rest of the way against a really good team that had great execution down the stretch!

A Collection of Random Thoughts:

I don't know how many games (and I admit to not getting to as many basketball games as I would like.) I have been to at Varsity or Holmes and with a big crowd or special event to bring in crowds and the team lays an egg. ETSU in the late 80's. Up on Elon by like 20 after an FCS Championship celebration around 2007. A few times we have had an early basketball season football-basketball double header. Lost them all it seems when I attended and many when I did not.

It was nice to be there in person and see Holmes with that environment. I intentionally used the SE entrance, as that is only used for sell-outs. I figured it was worth the extra walk to use an entrance that is generally never used, and the line was about a 20 second wait, unlike the main entrance that had a line down the steps at 10 minutes before tip-off.

As I was leaving Holmes I commented to a few JMU fans that I appreciated them coming to Boone and for them to have safe travels. The comments back were complimentary of Holmes and the environment at the game. I was also complimented on my haberdashery affects. And that generally does not happen given the logo.

After the game I found a very small pile of snow behind Plemmons, and that may be the only chance I get at seeing snow this year given the temperatures. I made a snowball. I had a post-victory meal at Pepper's, which is a location I have not been to in a few years it seems. I even took a little drive on the Parkway. For 10 o'clock at night it was rather busy. There were 4 or 5 cars parked at the overlook by Parkview Elementary and a few more automobiles parked at the overlooks closer to the Deep Gap Parkway point of egress. Hopefully there are no unwanted pregnancies from anyone parking there as I am not sure what anyone would be doing there otherwise as the cloud/fog coverage was preventing any views into the Piedmont.

Its great to be Mountaineer!

Situational awareness, kids. This was not a court storming worthy win. It WAS a great time to bust out the tried and true “over rated” chant.

Not sure it even warranted a rushing of the court. We were favored and in first place.

Personally, I've never been a fan of the "over rated" chant. It seems it takes away from what you just accomplished by downplaying the quality of the opponent you just beat. In other words, it was no big deal because the opposition wasn't that good to begin with.

Yes, "over rated" chant is overrated. Especially when they aren't ranked or favored.

I’m okay with court storming against ranked/18-3 teams that talk crap, due to the fact that those opportunities come about once every 5 years. It might be some students/players only court storming at App during a 5 year span so let em rush!!!

Agree on overrated. They didn't come in ranked and are behind us in the standings. Whose your daddy is great though. I remember back in high school we were playing our rival at their place for a big basketball game. I organized our side to bring newspapers and when their team was introduced we all held up our papers as if the intros didn't interest us.

I feel like the court storming happened because of security lining up in front of the student section with 2 minutes left. Escalation.

The whole game was surreal. I attended most every home game from 2011-2020 when I lived in Boone. This was special, moreso than Auburn.

Hope we do the same for Toledo.

If the kids want to storm the court, and they bring in some 3,000 to the game, storm the court after we win by half a hundred over Piedmont for all I care.

It actually went the other way. I was sitting behind the JMU bench and the kids started working their way down with about 5 minutes left and then security come on over there. I could see discussions (amicable) that they wouldn't hit the court until after the police and staff marked off the area for the handshake line and to get JMU off the court. After JMU started heading to the locker room, security stepped aside. It was handled well. I don't love the court storming because it inflates JMU's head, but I don't object to the fu either. Plus, keep in mind that Kerns invites them down to the court after every game to celebrate with the players for 15 minutes, so it's becoming a habit and a right.

Gotcha. I was higher up so I didn't see all that.

My thoughts are that we'll act like we've been there before once we've been there before.

If I’m JMU’s coach I’m working in more lineups with both their bigs playing at the same time versus the rest of their schedule until they play us again.

For the record, I am giving the thumbs up mainly for the phrase "half a hundred."

Maybe a bit for the sentiment, but mostly for the phrase.
