Saturday was fun and wonderful. But now begins a road trip south through the state of Georgia.
Thursday takes the Apps to Atlanta to face Georgia State. The Panthers are better than last year, but that's not saying much. They're 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the Sun Belt.
The Panthers' last trip to Boone kickoff off a four-game road swing, where they lost all four, including a painful 85-83 OT loss at Coastal. I watched part of that game and the basketball was not good. And on the flip side, App State has won six in a row, as I'm sure you might be aware of.
The good news for GSU is that they're 3-0 at home in the Sun Belt, beating Arkansas State by one, ODU by 7 and Southern not State by 28 (!). However, Southern beat State by 16 in Statesboro a week later, a 44-point flip, if I've counted my fingers and toes right.
In the first meeting, the Panthers hung around and were pesky as App didn't shoot the ball well. They don't get many assists or rebounds, so points in the paint will be critical.
If you're in Atlanta or the greater Atlanta area, make it the journey downtown to watch this team and support them. See if the concessions stand sells corndogs. And try not to murder people while sitting in traffic getting there, do it after the game.
Also, Troy, who is alone in second place, plays the same schedule this week, just in reverse - Southern then State - so the state of Georgia will determine how the top of the league looks in the next week.
