Hickory MBB
HIckory game will be on L-R campus on 14 December at 2 PM.
I did not think L-R would want to rent the gym to us as our Hickory campus is not going to help them long term. I stand corrected.

Re: Hickory MBB
Undecided on how I feel about playing in someone else's facility but if that is the case then let's sell it out!!!
Can we put a temporary block A at mid court?

Re: Hickory MBB
I do sort of like the idea of using CVCC as it is another public institution, and can be used for recruitment to both campuses. But L-R will give us more space for ticket sales. Being DII they have not been a competitor to us since 2007 that I can remember so I am fine with this. When is the last time we played them in basketball. It is beyond memory for me, and too lazy to look it up in the media guide.
I do think if we are going to have a Hickory campus and we charge the same fees and especially the athletic fee we need to provide some services to Hickory. Football is staying in Boone but every other team sport draws attendance that can fit into facilities in Hickory so having one event per year in Hickory for each team sport would be fine with me if it can be done without breaking the bank.
I wonder if it went like this two years ago?
1. App went to L-R to rent Shuford Gym and L-R said No.
2. App went to CVCC and they said yes, and likely could not say no.
3. Seeing demand for tickets (CVCC was pretty much packed it seems.) App went back to L-R and sweetened the deal for a larger space with more seats.

Re: Hickory MBB
It also could be affected by LR changing ADs in September. As many know, former App AD Roachel Laney served as the Interim AD before a new Director of Athletics was hired in December.

Re: Hickory MBB
I have advocated for that. A base to try and get more professional degrees in a larger population center and closest to our market in Charlotte

Re: Hickory MBB
It’s an interesting thought but it’s not feasible. LR is not in a strong financial position from an operating perspective. They are losing revenue and increasing expenses. They have strong private donors, but the former president was not a popular one and led to decreases. He “retired” and they are now under new leadership beginning this school year. It will be interesting to see what changes are made to keep their viable for the long term. They just announced free tuition for NC and SC students from families with less than $100k AGI.

I would think the only time to bring in a private religious affiliated school would be when the finances are not strong for the smaller school.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 30, 2025 10:49 amIt’s an interesting thought but it’s not feasible. They have been around for longer than App and at the size they are (more or less) for as long as I can remember. The only reason I could see them giving up their private status would be if they can't go forward on their own and the trustees want to see the campus stay a campus in some fashion. I was under the impression L-R was doing OK by and large.

Re: Hickory MBB
I'd be fine playing at CVCC even though its roughly 1k fewer bleacher seats. Is that little bit more of ticket sales for 1 game really going to make that much of a difference? LR is a competitor for students and they are making smart moves.
NC State just push the plan to allow CC students with 3.0+ gpas after finishing 2 year degrees to be accepted. I'm guessing App won't be able to mimic anything of the sort.
As far as buying LR thats nuts. We are a public school. Elon and Queens are private schools. The state would never sign off on App buying LR and LR would not sell out to them as they could no longer be a religious based school. It would be far more complicated that anything you might think of. So yea, its not going to happen. Buying our Hickory campus was the best option. Also, implying buying another property like LR doesn't mean you get the magically offer different degrees. You are just buying facilities. You can still only offer what the state allows us to offer.

CVCC was packed and other than the game itself fantastic …as to LR , never say never , well unless you are saying never say never. Then you have to say it. Twice.

Re: Hickory MBB
The CVCC has 4 EV chargers but clear on the other side of campus. They could not be farther away from the basketball arena at CVCC.
L-R has 4 much close and 8 more on the other side of campus that may or may not be on campus.
And looking this up I found L-R Asheville campus. I had not heard of this.

I don't like us playing non NCAA DI schools but we have to do what we have to do. L-R would be better than Carolina we are playing this year.

Re: Hickory MBB
I am pretty sure they had a campus in Columbia SC as well. I think they closed it down post-COVID.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Thu Oct 30, 2025 12:18 pmThe CVCC has 4 EV chargers but clear on the other side of campus. They could not be farther away from the basketball arena at CVCC.

Regardless, as some have suggested, they will never merge with App. They have a well established cultural identity.

Re: Hickory MBB
Queens had some pride too….. Ive heard pretty informed stories of how big of a financial mess they were in. Im not saying LR is in bad shape, I have no idea. What i am saying is things people thought were not possible are becoming possible. The difference between the haves and have nots has created unsustainable financial situations and we will see more mergers. LR most likely wouldnt be a target other than location, but if you think public schools cant participate, you are wrong….
