MBB @ TXSt 02/27/26

This game really feels like another must-win game. A win all but guarantees us a top seed in the SBC tournament. An L could mean we don't even get a top-4 seed depending on how things shake out. TxSt has a solid record but has also lost some questionable losses...kind of like us. One thing we have going for us is that we are undefeated so far this season against SBC West teams.

They have been very good at home, but many of the wins have been close. The West teams have a huge advantage with basically two guaranteed wins against ULM on their schedule.

The way I see it is there could be a 7-way tie for first place...that'd be tie-breaker hell...

4-1 against the group of Marshall, Troy, and S. Alabama. 15-1 at home I believe. If we are able to go in and beat them there, we'd be more than deserving of a top seed. Beat them and Marshall drops 1 of their 2, then we're in first.

It's interesting that we have the best scoring defense and average margin of victory by a good amount in the conference, but our 3pt% defense is #7, steals ranks #13, and blocks are #8. We're not doing anything flashy... Just solid in fg% defense at #2 and rebounding margin at #2.

South Alabama ranks #1 in FG% offense, FG% defense, and turnover margin yet their scoring margin is only #5 in the conference at +1.81 ppg.

They're last in free throw % and blocks and #10 in rebounding margin.

Surely the Sun Belt won't want Texas State to win their last ever Sun Belt home basketball game...

Good point, if they win, we should fire the commissioner

The pack line defense that Kerns runs is very useful in preventing penetration, but sometimes gives up some threes if players don’t close out quick enough. It’s like a soft man defense where every player is in help mode inside the “pack” when they’re not guarding the ball. Tony Bennett ran it at UVA and learned it from his dad at UW-Green Bay/Wisconsin/Washington St.

I think we're guaranteed a top 2 seed if we win, and will get the #1 seed if we win and Marshall drops at least one of their last two. Is that correct?

Sounds right since MArshall swept us.

So a win Friday means a bye to the semifinals. A loss could put us in 5th, requiring us to win double the amount of games in the tournament. Wild finish to the season!

So if App wins on Friday, do they win a share of the regular season championship?

Yes...but necessarily the top seed.
