Jay Canty

While I will not state what is here, as many here know Jay Canty has gotten himself into some off the court trouble. At this time the team or the school have not addressed this so far, allowing his academic ineligibility to be a punishment. As of Dec. 13, last day of exams, he will be eligible again academically, provided he pass his classes.

Unless something has happened, his issues will not be settled until at least the first week in January.
Should he be back on the court before January?

In a word--no. Serious biz here. Take care of that first! Giving in early sends the wrong message to Canty and everyone else. The athletic department has had adequate opportunity to learn and re-learn that lesson over and over and over...ad infinitum. It's long past time to act like the lesson has been learned.

Personally, with what he is charged with, I don't think he should be allowed back until his legal troubles are settled before a judge. Even though it's a misdemeanor it's not underage drinking or something like that, which nearly every college kid could be charged with almost every night. This is more serious. If it had been a felony he should have been kicked off the team, as Price was. Assault is still assault, especially of a female. As a still certified LEO I say let the case play out. I'm sure others will disagree but you asked for an opinion and that's mine.

I agree with both you and Chuck. No reason for him to return now (post 12/13), if he is dispatched from the team in January.

Reread firemoose's post. That sums it up as well as anything. Canty has a court date next week and another next month. It's a matter of public record.

The one on 12/12 is a different Canty. The Jan date is his (matched by D.O.B.)

Yeah, my bad; I see that now. The similar name and same hometown got me. Per Jay's ASU basketball bio, the other young man is Jay's older brother.

That doesn't improve things any.

Let's just hope and pray both young men have the inner strength and family support to get back on track for positive contributions to their respective communities. If they need additional support or direction, I hope they get it.

Hope Jay gets his academics under tow and gets his degree. Basketball is merely secondary to these other concerns.

Also according to his bio, he's a criminal justice major

Obviously this rings of the Price drama and the other football incidents a couple years ago. It looks as though character issues are not solely related to the football program.

Yeah. That popped up a few days ago. I just didn't say anything because speeding is the least of his worries right now but it doesn't help.

Personally it sounds to me like desperation to win on the part of Capel. I've already said what I think in my posts above.

Everyone is innocent until their day in court. Let him have that day but he's shouldn't play until then. Since he and Gray are charged with exactly the same charge one must wonder, if this was football season, if Coach Satt would let Gray play. Based on this year I don't think so.

I don't like this. Winning isn't everything. I don't want to see App State go down this road.

Purely for the sake of discussion, if I'm put in charge, Mr. Canty sits at least until his case is adjudicated. If he's found not guilty--he plays the next night out assuming he has the GPA and credit hours to be classified as a junior in good academic standing. If he's found guilty, he may be turning in his uniform. It would depend on whether he's remorseful and whether he has to serve an active sentence. If his attorney negotiates a plea bargain with the DA (let's assume that Canty is a first offender) then he sits until he has completed any assigned community service and anger management counseling. Then he still sits until I'm satisfied he's back on track as a decent citizen. And going forward he's on a short leash as long as he's a student at ASU.

Everybody who's been around this forum; the old Delphi forum or the even older SI forum are painfully familiar with my rants about our basketball program. I want to win and win big; but I want it done the right way. The young woman who was injured in this matter is someone's daughter. I'd want to be able to look her (and her parents) in the eye knowing that I'd handled it strictly by the book.
