Capel's excuses for poor schedule omit his need for some gimmes to pad his winning percentage.

I guess his next job won't be in PR.
Geez.

The first D-I team he should worry about bringing to campus is his own. So far, all we have proven is that we could be successful in D-II or NAIA.

“It’s tough every year,” he said.
Like they say, "if it's too hot in the kitchen, get out!" Maybe it will be less stressful in the pee wee league.

In Capel's defense, I can imagine that it's extremely difficult to get teams to come to Boone. The fact that there is no airport in town is a major factor and the closest one to us is in Tennessee and that's just a local airport. The closest international airport is 100 miles away in Charlotte. So once teams land, you're talking about a bus ride that's either down a mountain road/highway or one that's two hours up the interstate. Then you add the fact that it's Winter and snow is on the ground. Idk, I totally get why schools may not want to go through all of that to come play a non conference game.
However, you know what will fix that? Winning. If App can go on the road and upset a power conference team or make the dance, then maybe teams will find coming to Boone to play OOC games more valuable.

I don't buy that excuse at all. Do you know how many mid majors are within driving distance? No airport needed. I can understand that being an excuse to a point -- but 4 non-D1 is just ridiculous. If they can make the trip, why can't D1 schools? I don't expect us to get UCLA or Stanford in the Holmes Center, but NC A&T, Gardner Webb, UNC Asheville, High Point University, ETSU, Belmont, NC Central, etc. are all better opponents than Bluefield and Milligan and within driving distance.
I understand some of the teams I mentioned are ones we played on the road, but I was simply pointing out there are a plethora of schools within driving distance so an airport is not needed.

True to a point but there is driving distance and also doesn't anyone ski or hike? Come for a game close to the weekend, or would their coach let them ski during season? Seems like a good way to bond to me.

Seeing there is no airport in town and the closest one to us is in Tennessee, makes one wonder how we're going to get those Sun Belt teams to Boone next year. What were they thinking?

Our baseball program doesnt seem to have any trouble bringing division 1 teams to Boone. Notre Dame, Wake Forest, ETSU, UNCA, High Point, GW, and Cambell are all coming up the mountain. I know those arent all big names, but that would be a big improvement over our current basketball schedule. Not to mention the road games the diamond Apps are playing. Sounds like mothing but excuses from Capel to me.

For programs like us, scheduling has everything to do with winning. To produce a quality out-of-conference home schedule, we need 1) an RPI of 150 or better so that opponents aren't penalized by playing us, and 2) large enough home crowds to support a meaningful financial guarantee. Winning takes care of both.

Fan support should be in full force regardless of record.

Not disagreeing with you. App plays ETSU regualry and should play High Point more often than they have, but they do schedule them from time to time. A&T also should get more schedule time. Belmont is in Nashville, TN so no way would they drive to Boone. Besides, they're a serious mid-major team and would much rather play more high profile schools.

So it does seem possible that our BBall team could also if we had one worth playing. I think it's like I've hear before "The road to the Championship goes through ..." if we don't make our self a stop on the NC train no one is getting on board!

That is true in fantasy land, but in the real world.........
Two crappy NFL teams in the nations largest market equals an empty stadium.

Fan support is a critical component. And it goes beyond showing up for home games and contributing to the Yosef Club. We fans owe it to our school to support our coaching staffs in every way possible. And that specifically means not calling for his or her head every time the team hits a rough patch. We'll never know how coach Capel's tenure at App would have turned out had he gotten more support during his first couple of years, but the venom directed toward him certainly didn't help. It's self-fulfilling. For every message board post proclaiming what a moron we have for a coach, the harder it is for him or her to produce a winning product and the more it looks like he is indeed a moron. Granted, coach Capel was woefully short on experience when he took the job but that wasn't his fault and we did him no favors on this and other message boards by constantly calling for his dismissal. Ditto for coach Satterfield and coach Jones. We've already had some to call for coach Satterfield's head and the cries will likely grow louder next fall when wins are even harder to come by. That's unfortunate because coach Satterfield and his staff are exceptional coaches and individuals, and I for one am glad they represent our university. There's also a good chance some message board blowhard will call for coach Jones' scalp this spring when the baseball team struggles against arguably the toughest schedule in our history. For some this "it's time to fire the coach" mentality is their way of kicking the dog. It's their way of voicing frustration. But it does nothing to help the school we all love. We have athletic officials who are paid good money to make personnel decisions. They're quite capable of making those decisions without our input.

Of course, those last five have been to Boone for bball games. Hopefully, the next coach will provide a better home schedule.

This is a fan forum. Fans will be fans, and that involves voicing their displeasure.

Absolutely true 78!!! --- wonder how quickly these "fans" would call for firing their family members or friends who don't meet all expectations??? - some throw around the term "fire 'em" like it means nothing more than taking out the trash - these are people's lives and it affects more than just the head coach ---

I don't know this for sure - BUT, I doubt seriously Coach Capel makes the schedule ---
