The Lutz "Tree" is scary

This is the portion of the Bobby Lutz "coaching tree" that has any credence in discussions of a possible Lutz move to ASU. Although I haven't completely bought in to the "Lutz is our guy" mantra, I have to admit it would be a "convenient" hire for Charlie Cobb. He just places a call to his old stompin' grounds and places an order for some coaches. Then, all he has to do is write some checks and face some reporters and cameras. I think he's a lot smarter than that; but I thought Jason Capel was the last guy in the entire world he'd hire as our head coach. So much for what I know; but I digress.

In the event that Lutz eventually lands in an office at HCC, pick any three of the following four and you will have named Lutz's assistants on the next ASU men's basketball coaching staff. As you read, you won't go far before you find some very direct Sunbelt coaching experience. Karma or not?

Orlando Early--ass't coach at NC State; former ass't coach at UNCC, USC, 'Bama; and former head coach at ULouisiana-Monroe (Sunbelt)
Rob Moxley--ass't coach at NC State; former ass't coach at UNCC
Benny Moss--ass't coach at Coastal Carolina; former ass't coach at Pfeiffer and UNCC; and former head coach at UNC-Wilmington
Bobby Kummer--former ass't coach at AppState; former ass't coach at UNCC

There's one thing about this that is even scarier than Cobb hiring Bobby Lutz. If Lutz says no or if his price tag's considered to be too high, Cobb could default straight to Orlando Early. That's scary. Early couldn't get the job done in 5 years at UL-M; we don't want him making things worse here.

Just one disagreement. I doubt we have room for Lutz and 3 of those 4 in our budget. Some of those guys might be out of our price range as a 1st assistant. I think all are out of our price range as a 3rd assistant. Our 3rd assistant's have typically been guys who are breaking into college coaching for the first time.

Hard to think that our Basketball Program COULD get worse.....

I completely agree with your "typical" assessment. I just don't think Lutz would consider the position if Cobb starts talking "typical" to him. It would be a fairly short discussion. Cobb'll have to s-t-r-e-t-c-h. Moxley's salary might be a problem; and Early's getting older. He may be tired of moving. He's done a lot of it.

Boone/Blowing Rock are areas that people go to to retire and get away from it all. If I was to retire to a new area I wouldn't mind having a few years in with the local university first.

Just saying.

Now, let's carry this "Lutz theory" to a completely ridiculous extent. What if Cobb's master plan includes signing Lutz so as to help convince https://twitter.com/im_dat_kid_dtae to keep his basketball commitment to ASU. After all, it's Lutz and one other State assistant who are the main cogs in the connection between State and Brewster Academy. Brewster Academy...2014 national champions....whose team captain this season was Devonte Graham...

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, this can't happen? No way! Never! But, what if it did...

This whole Bobby Lutz thing is never gonna fly!
