First steps for the new coach? Fox by all accounts so far.

Unread post by appdaze » Sat Apr 05, 2014 3:07 pm

What should be the first steps for the new coach?

retaining recruits
recruiting his own players,
marketing his ideas to fans
implementing his ideas with whats left
staying on the DL or really putting himself out there
kissing up to the big donors
hiring a staff
retaining the old staff
thinking of a nickname name for the Holmes Center
bringing in cups with ice and bbq

any of those or none what are your thoughts?

Taking a king-sized can of Lysol to try to get rid of the stench from the previous coaching staff. ;)

1. Contact all current players and sell them on your vision (recruiting always starts with the players you already have).
2. Hire at least 2 assistants ASAP.
3. Develop a plan to get out of the APR mess.
4. Decide which recruits he is willing to let walk, and which he wants to try and convince to stay.
5. Begin recruiting.
6. Hire third assistant and Director of basketball operations.

Come on Man - are you sitting there thinking the previous coaching staff didn't care? didn't work their butts off? didn't want to win even more than me or you? --- that were not successful but to post something like this is juvenile ---

WVA,
Lighten up. Not a "'juvenile" indictment of each individual coach's work ethic, but a realistic comment on where our program has been taken(i.e. dumpster fire). The results on and off the court were unacceptable. This caring, hardworking staff had to be held accountable, and that's why they are gone. If my saying that they created a stench offends you, so be it.

I just think you exaggerated a bit as the assistants could only perform as well as the head coach allowed. We won't know their talents and work ethics for sure as soon as we see them land elsewhere and that will take a while given their current tarnished resume..

Not sure I agree, Cline. If assistants are promoted to HC (as many are) because of the success of their team, should they not also be accountable for poor results, instead of saying that they could only perform as well as the head coach allowed? Good assistants are evaluated as such and will land on their feet. Others, however, will not. As I said in my last post, my original comment was not directed at each individual assistant coach, but the overall state of the program.

Assuming Coach Fox and the university can agree on the contract term (four v. five years), salary, salary incentives and all budget items (and that's a huge assumption), then Fox will need to be juggling nine things at once in his first week on the job. He can sleep later!

* Meet with administrative assistant Kim McConnell and develop a plan for how they will work
together on appointments, phone calls, travel arrangements and correspondence.
* Meet with Jay Sutton & Doug Justice and learn up-front what players have been or remain in
jeopardy with the criminal justice system.
* Meet with Stacy Sears, director of academic services for men's basketball and get a thorough
(the good and the bad) academic report on each player. Let Sears know there's a new sheriff in
town!
* Meet with the current players both as a group and individually and lay down the law. Let the
players know there's a new sheriff in town! Find out who's committed to the new ASU
basketball; who wants a release to transfer; and who should get a pink slip for cause.
* Meet with Kareem Young and learn what off-season strength/conditioning routines are in progress
(if any). Lay out expectations.
* Make contact with all 2014 LOI signees; including DGraham (2013).
* Make contact with all unsigned Class of 2014 players holding offers from the Capel staff.
* Hire two highly trusted assistant coaches; put an athletic department credit card in their wallets
and get them on the road making targeted visits--pronto.
* Learn from Sutton/Justice what prelim work has been done on the 2014-15 schedule.

Why would it offend me? - I don't know Jason Capel nor any of his assistants - I just hope no one on MMB faces a similar situation, working hard to succeed in an aspect of his/her professional/personal life only to have someone come along say "get the Lysol and remove the stench" once said endeavor turns out to be unsuccessful ---

This regime was inept. When the team appeared lost and couldn't buy a win against a D-1 school, the coach would throw the players under the bus. Attendance fell to squat, the team became irrelevant in the SoCon, and we now face APR issues that will haunt us for years. Our only ESPN highlight for four years was an air ball free throw.

If I had done similar damage to my employer and stakeholders at my job, regardless of how hard I worked or wanted to succeed, I guarantee that "stench" would be one of the most complimentary terms that would be said.

That's fine and I guess if that were the case you'd have no problem with people posting your ineptitude with your name on the world wide web? - we are not talking about bombers or child molesters here but basketball coaches - they worked hard, they didn't succeed

D-1 BBall coaches are public figures who know going in that their name will be the object of public scorn in the event that they don't perform to standards, let alone if they lead the team to unprecedented lows in every category.

I can't speak to their effort, but judging off their performance they either they tried and they're just that bad at their jobs, or they didn't give it their all. I'm not sure which is worse.

and Tevin Baskin's almost full court heave that he made just before the half against the Citadel last year. Of course, I think we lost that game.

Greensboro news is reporting it's all but a done deal, and that the done deal could come today.

Thats good news as the sooner this deal can be written the sooner he can start the clean up and repairs needed in our program.

There's an old saying - we old farts have heard this our entire lives - TREAT OTHERS LIKE YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED - no need to delve into the depths of ridicule just because a person is a public figure who is a college basketball coach ---

I've heard the same during my quarter-century on earth as well and the saying outdates even the oldest of MMB farts. I'm just saying, unkind words for a man (men) that destroyed our basketball program are hardly unforeseeable. And I don't think criticising their performance specifically (which is all I've really read here) is crossing any sort of line of decency.
