Not unexpected. At least it's not two years and doesn't say anything about loss of scholarships.

But what's crazy is some people are actually surprised by this.

Capel strikes again...So glad that bum is finally gone.

If it's just a one-year ban and no scholarship reductions, I count that as a big win.

Wow, talk about burying the lead.

Let's be real, it was unlikely that App would have made the post season next year anyways, although it would've been fun to play for it in New Orleans. Now it's time to hit the books and get that APR up. IMO, if anyone's grades are even threatening being below avg, then you need to cut ties and move on. The silver lining here is that Fox gets an entire year to install his system and get his freshmen up to speed without really any additional consequence.

Still looking forward to next season!

This should come as a surprise to no one. Our basketball team is so far in the hole it seems the only light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train at this point. I hope Fox can bring some of his Davidson mentality up the mountain, this mess is going to take at least five years to clean up. It's shameful that the biggest crowds filling up the Holmes center are for commencement ceremonies. We honestly are starting fresh and from the bottom, just give me a little taste of success again. Hard to believe we were in the SoCon championship game just a few years ago and now here we sit...

I think that may be a tad much. I think that year 3 of Fox's tenure is gonna be night and day compared to this past season. Just my thoughts. On fan attendance though, I agree 100% that more people should work on attending. Goes for both students and alumni.

Easily could have been much worse. Many were expecting a minimum 2 year ban and possible loss of scholarships. If this is all we get we should count our blessings. Coach Fox appears to be bringing in players who will only make things better and quickly.

I totally agree. I'm actually optimistic about men's basketball for the first time in several years. I think we turned a corner the day Jim Fox accepted the offer to become our head coach. There will be some bumps along the way--but just stop and think what he's accomplished in the short time he's been aboard...mending fences...meeting alumni and students...evaluating returning talent...recruiting to meet specific needs...revamping a depleted player roster...all signs of building a program...not just assembling a bunch of warm bodies.

No question we need to improve our academic performance. We're a better university than this, and this is unacceptable.

But, gotta love the NCAA...

Poor actual grades in real classes = postseason ban for App.

Good fake grades in fake classes = no sanctions for UNC.

Single-year score of 979 for the last counting year is very good going forward. Thank goodness for Healy and Okam making Dean's List.

Good to see the AD's office recognize the problem, which happened pretty quickly, and take corrective steps on it.

The Sun Belt will probably send out a release sometime stating just that in order to protect their auto-bid.

I have to believe the NCAA took into account bringing in a new coach, the house cleaning since then, and our past scores before Capel came in. We were in the top 10% just a few years ago so it's pretty clear this was a Capel problem not an App problem. Big break for us!

The penalties are a post-season ban and reduced weekly allowable practice hours from 20 to 16.

The lack of big-time penalties has more to do with App being a first-time offender. The fear of multi-year bans was the though process of how Capel's first two years were bad, why should the third be any different? The 979 score was a very pleasant surprise.

Another factoid from the NCAA's release is that App is appealing the punishment.

Thank goodness for Tevin Baskin; and more recently for Marcus Wright! They'll help next year's numbers.

I may not understand the APR, so help me if I'm wrong, but doesn't cutting players loose normally hurt your APR.

Lots of vague info to go through. But to update. App is appealing the Level 1 punishments (practice reductions). The post-season ban is not apart of the appeal so it'll stand. Per Sun Belt bylaws that means the team is ineligible for the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Also, Mitch Woods will count towards next year's single-year total. It's a free point (player graduating after eligibility expires) so the single-year score for 2013-14 could be higher than 1000.
