UL-Monroe @ ASU Noon and 3:30 PM HCC

Unread post by asu66 » Sat Feb 28, 2015 11:03 am

Headed to The High Country for this afternoon's games, so not much time for a thorough pre-game post. Just be aware of this.

UL-M Women (RPI #217) v. the Lady Apps (RPI #172). UL-M and GaState are tied with the Lady Apps for seventh place in the league. With only eight tourney slots available, one of those three teams will not make it to tourney play. The Lady Apps can get the tie-breaker advantage over UL-M with a home court win today. That's what's on the line for our Apps. In the first game between the two teams, The Apps held the Warhawks w/o a FG for the last 12 minutes of the second half; with M.Sydnor nursing a swollen knee on the bench. A.Bassett-Smith led the team in scoring and the Apps' defense stole the game 55-54. It will probably take a similar effort to get the win today.

In the case of the ASU men (RPI #276); they are playing only for pride and a chance to make some sort of favorable impression on Coach Fox heading into the off season. The only problem, is they will be trying to impress while facing the first-place Warhawks, probably the league's best team led by the league's best and most successful head coach.

I won't mince words here. The challenge will be to try to out-score UL-M (RPI #117), the SunBelt's best defensive team. Since scoring has been historically difficult for this team and ever-so-much-more-difficult in recent weeks, I don't have high hopes. Coach Fox was, by body language and by dejected tone, very obviously crestfallen by his team's play in the two blow-outs versus GaSouth. I'm actually more concerned about him than I am about our team. He needs to see some promise for the future; and he as much as said that he isn't seeing it in recent play. In Thursday's post-game show, DJ asked him if there was one player that had shown promise for down the road. He responded with a long, slow sigh and said, "well, actually no."

And there you have it. My prediction for a 50-50 women's game and another adventure with a men's team that shoots in the 38-40 percent area against the league's worst teams; in the 20s to low 30s with the best. Ugly!

I hope to be wrong in favor of our Apps in both contests. It's been a while since our teams have won a double-header. It's highly unlikely to happen today--but it's a good day for me to be wrong!

In a laugher of predictions, RealTime PRI.com has the Lady Apps winning by 12; and our men winning by one. Unlikely, but possible on a Saturday at home...I hope to witness it.

Lady Apps 32, UL-M 31 (Half-Time)

ASU fell behind early by as many as 13 points on poor shooting and turnovers, but charged from behind to take the lead at the half. M.Sydnor, A.Bassert-Smith and B.Carter led the charge.

It's funny that we knock off ull in football to send GSU into 1st and now ulm in basketball to send GSU to 1st.

Great to end the losing streak and get back into the winning column today. Great win, that hopefully restores confidence and builds some momentum to finish out strong!

This team really needs Eaves to hit the shots like he did today. When he is on, we are completely different team.

I'm tired of helping the Gnats out so much, they owe us.

Well, the good news is, first place didn't get them a bowl game in football, and it won't get them an NCAA bid in basketball.

Both men's and women's basketball win, baseball beats a ranked Maryland team and softball sweeps 2. That's what I call ending February with a bang! Way to go Apps!

Went through the stats and was stunned by Monroe's inability to get to the basket. They settled for floaters and 15 foot jump shots that did not fall. They only attempted 3 free throws for the entire game compared to Apps 14.

We won a game in which our two biggest role players (Spags and Burgess) scored a combined five points against the first place team in the Belt. Babic had 6 points and 6 assists and Lawson added 8 points and 6 boards.

Lawson displayed the skill yesterday that many of us hoped he would bring when he transferred.

JMO, but if he had just slightly more confidence and game experience, Lawson could EASILY be one of the best big men in the conference. He really has a nice soft shot, can make a smooth move to the basket, and can get any rebound when aggressive.
