App @ UNC Roll Call

Unread post by MountaineerMafia » Sun Dec 20, 2015 6:15 pm

Ok, so our team is off to another weak start. BUT, this is a big time in-state opponent who is highly ranked. So, how many are going to the Dean Dome for Monday night's matchup?

I'll be there with my fiancé and 2 others.

Let's pull off an upset bigger than Michigan! :o Or at least put up a decent fight

Are there tickets available? I have never been to an App basketball game and would not mind going if tickets were not to bad.

Plenty of seats. Even advertising in the triangle that there are plenty of seats available. Students gone and many people out of town.

We were in the Texas game all night; a day or two after the Longhorns beat the RoyBoys on a shot at the buzzer. So UNCheat can be beaten. Our guys didn't shoot well, didn't rebound and didn't show any fight what-so-ever against a bad Charlotte team. Unless Fox can get them better motivated, I fully expect our Apps to play the role of a doormat tomorrow night in the Smith Center. I'd love to be wrong.

The two freshmen guards--Shabazz and Logan--have been very disappointing to date. Their shot selection has been terrible. They take a lot of shots behind the arc--and clank the ball off the glass or throw up air balls quite a lot. Finally, both of them slash aggressively to the basket and then put up off-balance "layup" shots from five or six feet away from the rim that rarely come near the basket. They end up being block or steal turnovers and run-outs toward our opponent's basket. Those two guys have a long way to go to adjust to the college game.

One other item. I strongly believe in and support Coach Fox, but he's got to recruit some players who can shoot. We don't have many who can be called on to score when we desperately need a basket. That's a big problem.

Case in point. Last spring, Fox and company were scouring the country for a JuCo forward who could shoot. They narrowed it down to two players...6-4 Anthony Vanhook from Chapel Hill HC and Cape Fear CC (a JuCo all-American) and 6-5 Matt O'Boyle from Pima CC in Peoria, AZ.

App was the only DI program to offer O'Boyle. There was conflicting info in the air as to whether Fox offered Vanhook at all, but he wanted to play at ASU. Both players were natural forwards--but 6-4 and 6-5 forwards are a dime a dozen and don't make much of an impact in DI basketball.

Well, as luck would have it, UNCC picked up Vanhook very late--well after O'Boyle had committed to App. In Saturday's App-UNCC game, Vanhook clearly appeared to be the better of the two players in face-to-face play.

Vanhook was 5 of 8 from the floor; 4 of 6 from the line; had 8 boards; dished out 4 assists and was charged with zero fouls and zero turnovers. He scored 14 points in 25 minutes of play.

Oboyle was 3 of 7 from the floor; one of four from the arc; dished out two assists, grabbed 2 boards; and was charged with one foul and zero turnovers. He scored 7 points in 18 minutes of play.

Vanhook appears to have been the better recruit. It's waaaaay too early to write O'Boyle off; but he'd better find his game soon. Fox may be having buyer's remorse on this transaction. We'll know in about two years how it works out.

Hope our kids are out of their funk from Sat. afternoon. They, for whatever reason, just were not ready to play. Their most serious dysfunction on Sat. involved poor shooting and poor rebounding. The 49ers outrebounded us 43-25. That's bloody awful. Embarrassing.

Hopefully they'll get it together and play well enough to gain the respect of fellow Apps fans and the RoyBoys.

Will be there with the family! Go App. Lets support Coach Fox and the team. He is building a program and that takes time. He was left with a mess and a lot of clean up. They boys will find their way and will be fun to watch!!

For those that go, don't say anything when UNC is shooting free throws. Roy will have you tossed out of the Dean Dome. LOL

I graduated from high school with the heckler in question. He couldn't be a nicer person, and is now on the Concord City Council.

Had planned to go but after getting back from Montgomery I think I have too many pre-holiday chores to take care of.

For those wondering, plenty of tix available and they start at $20 for upper deck, or you can probably find them cheaper from sellers outside the arena.

Hey, I went to school with him too...I graduated one year after him....correct, super nice guy. His dad was my first basketball coach as a kid at the boys club. I thought the heckling was hilarious, of course I'm a Duke bball fan.
