The Tx State men's basketball team begins a stretch of three straight Sun Belt Conference road games Saturday at App State. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET in HCC.
Heading into the game the Bobcats are 7-4 overall, 1-1 in the early Sun Belt season and have won four of their last six games. The Mountaineers are 2-11 on the year and 0-3 in the league. They have lost nine straight with their last victory coming on Nov. 26 against Liberty, 73-62, in the 2015 Challenge in Music City tourney held in Nashville, Tennessee.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting ever between the two programs. App State holds a 2-1 series lead after winning both games last season. Tx State's lone victory was on Dec. 23, 2010 in the Cancun Governor's Cup 79-68.
In SBC play, Kavin Gilder-Tilbury leads the Bobcats in scoring at 15.0 points per game and is second in rebounding (7.0) behind Anthony Roberson's 8.0 rpg. Emani Gant is averaging 12.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg thru the first two conference games while for the season he paces the team with 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
As usual, senior guard Frank Eaves continues to lead the Apps--scoring 19.5 points per game on 43.5% shooting. He's followed by true freshman Ron Shabazz at 9.1 ppg on 35.7% shooting. Senior Guard Chris Burgess is next, scoring at 6.8 ppg on 43.4 % accuracy.
Where the rubber hits the road, the Apps are having a nightmarish season shooting from three-point range; shooting from the free-throw line and in offensive-defensive rebounding. Oh, did I mention turnovers. By the numbers, the Apps have earned a -4.4 rebounding margin and -3.4 turnover margin on the season. The team has committed 221 turnovers as compared with their opponents' 173. That's a mind-numbing stat.
Our team has played badly for *most* of the season. It's high time for our guys to show some fire in the belly and out-play the opposition for 40 minutes Today's the day...a Saturday afternoon home date with good driving conditions...arguably a decent crowd (all things considered)...and a team that can be beaten on the opponent's bench.
Tx State is favored by 2 (two) points. I like the Apps breaking that miserable losing streak. They'd better do it today, because their next game is at RPI #69 Arkansas-LIttle Rock sporting an 11-2 overall record.
